Whether you use a laptop on a daily basis or you have an office setup, a keyboard is a must-have for anyone looking to improve their typing experience. They’re designed to be ergonomic and comfortable to use for hours at a time, and they can make writing emails, essays or reports feel less cumbersome (after all, who doesn’t find a keyboard’s click satisfying?).
The experts and engineers at the Good Housekeeping Institute test all types of office equipment and essentials, from the best laptops to standing desks, desk mats and more. When selecting the best keyboards on the market, we reviewed each pick for size and weight, comfort when typing, features such as multi-device pairing, connectivity and more. According to our pros, these are the best keyboards of 2024 to make typing more enjoyable.
Pros
- Comfortable and responsive, according to testers
- Low-profile design
- Features backlit keys
Cons
- Pricey
A top performer in our keyboard tests, the MX Keys S from Logitech is an excellent choice for anyone hoping to get some work done. Its low-profile design supports natural wrist positioning so your hands remain comfortable, and wireless connectivity makes it easy to move around.
It's pricey, but we love that it comes with features like multi-device pairing for up to three devices and backlit keys that light up as your hands approach the keyboard (and automatically brighten or fade depending on your environment). Plus, recharging is easy with USB-C and our test engineer found setup via Bluetooth to be seamless.
“I like how it’s quiet yet still feels responsive,” said GH Institute Reviews Analyst, Grace Wu, who recently switched to this keyboard. “The contoured circle on each key feels comfortable and makes typing a little more precise and accurate.” She added that she is making fewer typos than she typically would while typing at a faster rate, thanks to the keyboard’s thoughtful design.

Pros
- Inexpensive
- Fantastic consumer reviews and rating
Cons
- Wired connection only
Sometimes a simple, no-frills keyboard that does the job is all you need. If you don’t mind a wired connectivity (meaning you’ll have to connect your keyboard via a USB port to use it), we recommend this pick from Amazon that’s under $20. Featuring more than 7,000 reviews and an average 4.5-star rating, it’s the ideal choice for office setups.
One online Amazon reviewer described it as “perfect, inexpensive and tactile without being too quiet or too ‘clicky,’” while another highlighted its “comfort, functionality and design”— including its low-profile keys that provide a comfortable typing experience.
Size: 17.4" x 5" x 1.1" | Connectivity: Wired | Bluetooth multi-device pairing: No
Pros
- Compatible with both Mac and PC
- Clicky, responsive feel
- RGB backlight
Cons
- May be too loud for office environments
Though Keychron has a wide variety of models to choose from, our pros like the K2 for its great functionality. One of our tech pros has been using it for years and swears by its performance. Like other mechanical keyboards, it has a tactile, responsive feel due to the mechanical switches underneath each key as well as a satisfying clicky sound reminiscent of older keyboards. Nevertheless, it’s packed with modern features like wireless connectivity and multi-device pairing for up to three devices.
What’s also unique is that it’s compatible with both Mac and PC and comes with extra keycaps you can switch in and out depending on the operating system you plan on using so you have access to the same function keys. It's both customizable and durable, making it worth the higher price point. It also features an adjustable RGB backlight to help you type in dimmer environments. The only drawback worth flagging is that it might be too loud for office environments where a quieter keyboard is preferred.
Size: 25.2" x 25.2" x 7.6" | Connectivity: Wireless or wired | Bluetooth multi-device pairing: Yes (3 devices)
Pros
- Sleek, slim design
- Comfortable to type on
- Seamless connectivity to Apple devices
Cons
- Doesn’t feature multi-device pairing
If a slim and sleek style will fit your desk perfectly, look no further than the Magic Keyboard from Apple that matches with your Apple display or MacBook. Not only does it connect seamlessly, but it also delivers a quiet and comfortable typing experience, with more than 14,000 Amazon reviewers who gave it a five-star rating.
Our pros not only appreciate that the Magic Keyboard connects quickly to devices, but that it’s easy to charge and has a long battery life. The numeric keypad is a nice plus, but if you’d like to also take advantage of touch ID, our pros suggest considering the newer (albeit pricier) Magic Keyboard.
Size: 0.16–0.43" x 6.48" x 4.52" | Connectivity: Wireless | Bluetooth multi-device pairing: No
Pros
- Compact, lightweight design
- Soft keys for a comfortable typing experience
- Available in three colors
Cons
- Not rechargeable
Not only is this compact keyboard super lightweight at under a pound and easy to transport in a backpack if needed, but we also love the soft yet responsive feel of Logitech’s keys. When testing this model, our pros found that it connected quickly to both PCs and Macs. We appreciate that battery life is up to 36 months, according to the brand, just note that it’s not rechargeable (batteries are included).
On top of its great value, we like that it’s available in white, black and pink. For an even more compact and portable option, our pros also recommend the petite Logitech Keys-to-Go 2.
Size: 10.98" x 4.88" x 0.63" | Connectivity: Wireless | Bluetooth multi-device pairing: Yes (3 devices)
Pros
- Comfortable, ergonomic design
- Comes with separate numeric keypad
- Built-in wrist rest
Cons
- Takes up a lot of space on desks
Though this HP keyboard might initially take some getting used to, GH Institute experts were impressed by how easy and comfortable it was to type on. Its unique split-zone design and negative tilt are intended to provide support and reduce stress on your hands during extended use.
You can expect it to take up more room than your average keyboard, thanks to the wave shape and larger, built-in foam wrist rest, but we absolutely love that it comes with a separate numeric keypad so you can store it (and save some space) when not in use. Also note that it’s not rechargeable, but it does feature up to 24 months of battery life, according to the brand. As one online reviewer wrote, “I didn’t think I would like it as much as I do” and we couldn’t agree more.
Size: 15.7" x 1.54" x 9.2" | Connectivity: Wireless | Bluetooth multi-device pairing: Yes (3 devices)
How we test keyboards
The test engineers and analysts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have been testing consumer electronics and office essentials for decades. When testing the best keyboards, we first researched the latest and most popular models on the market. Next, we reviewed at least 10 keyboards for criteria such as ease of use, comfort, design specifications, performance and extra features. When possible, we also considered feedback from our consumer testers who shared their everyday experience typing on keyboards.
What to look for when shopping for the best keyboard
✔️ Wireless vs. wired: While most keyboards you’ll find these days offer Bluetooth connectivity so you can pair instantly to your device, you can save some money by opting for a wired model. Wired keyboards are best if you don’t plan on switching among devices, or your keyboard will remain on your desk like at the office. Just keep in mind that with wired keyboards, you lose the option of seamless multi-device pairing, which is what allows you to switch among various devices quickly and efficiently (and without having to mess with cables).
✔️ Layout: Consider whether you want a more compact layout (like a full-size tenkeyless keyboard without a numeric keypad), or if you have some extra space and would like a numeric keypad on the right side of your keyboard (like a 104 keys keyboard). While the addition of a numeric keypad takes up more space, it’s convenient if you spend a lot of time doing calculations or working in Excel. You should also consider whether you'll be using a Mac or PC as the function keys aren't identical and if you'll be using QWERTY, which is the standard layout you'll find in the U.S.
✔️ Mechanical or membrane: Mechanical keyboards are beloved by users for their tactile, responsive feel, thanks to individual mechanical switches underneath each key. They're customizable and typically more durable than membrane keyboards, which use a rubber or silicone membrane underneath the keys. Membrane keyboards typically result in a quieter, softer typing experience that may be preferred in shared office environments.
✔️ Comfort: First and foremost, your keyboard should feel comfortable to type on. If you feel any stress at the end of the day in your hands or wrists, you may need to consider another design or a keyboard with ergonomic features. Finding a comfortable keyboard with proper positioning is the first step in avoiding carpal tunnel syndrome.
