Under-$100 earbuds and headphones can be a smart buy, especially if you (or your kids) are always misplacing things. Whether you want the freedom of wireless earbuds, the simplicity of a wired pair, or the fuller fit of over-ear headphones, there are plenty of affordable options to choose from. Some even add features like noise cancellation or water resistance, handy for everything from your commute to a workout.

Our top picks:

The audio experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have tested everything from the latest noise-cancelling headphones like the AirPods Max 2 to some of the most popular earbuds. Our pros regularly evaluate headphones and earbuds in the Lab, looking at factors like comfort, ease of use, and sound quality, and gather feedback from consumer testers. Here are affordable picks under $100 that stood out in our testing.

Best Overall

Apple EarPods

EarPods

Pros

  • Much cheaper than AirPods
  • No charging or Bluetooth pairing required
  • USB-C connector works with compatible devices
  • Built-in remote controls volume, playback, and calls
  • Open-ear design doesn’t use silicone tips

Cons

  • No noise cancellation or sound isolation
  • Wired design can get in the way during movement
TypeWired
Battery lifeN/A
Noise cancellingNo

What you need to know: Wired earbuds have made a comeback, and the Apple EarPods are some of the coolest you’ll find. They plug directly into a USB-C port, so there’s no pairing or charging to fuss with, and the built-in remote lets you adjust volume, control playback, and answer calls. Plus, they’re significantly cheaper than wireless AirPods.

Why we like them: “These have solid bass response for headphones this cheap, and they’re also a cult style item,” said GH Data & Product Operations Manager Nikolas Greenwald. They’re a straightforward option for listening to music and taking calls on compatible devices, and testers love their open-ear design even though it doesn’t seal off outside noise like in-ear buds with silicone tips would. “I like them not only because of the way they sound, but the way they fit into your ears,” said Greenwald. Testers do warn, though, that the wire can get tangled or caught when you’re on the go.

Pros

  • Up to 30 hours of claimed total playtime
  • IPX5 water resistance
  • Sound and controls can be customized in the app
  • Compact charging case

Cons

  • No active noise cancellation
TypeWireless in-ear earbuds
Battery lifeUp to 10 hours per charge; up to 30 hours with the charging case
Noise cancellingNo

What you need to know: At roughly $20, it’s hard to find wireless earbuds at a better deal. Anker products have historically performed well in GH tests, and we like that this pair packs several useful features, including app-based customization, 22 preset EQs, and a compact charging case with a lanyard. The case and earbuds offer up to 30 hours of claimed total playtime, and an IPX5 water-resistance rating makes them suitable for workouts and rainy commutes.

Why we like them: Our experts appreciate that Soundcore’s app lets you adjust the sound to your liking, while two built-in microphones make these suitable for calls. Just note that they don’t have active noise cancellation, so they won’t quiet surrounding sounds like more feature-rich models.

Pros

  • Clip-anywhere case design
  • Up to 28 hours of total battery life
  • Rapid charging
  • Multipoint pairing

Cons

  • No active noise cancellation
  • May not be comfortable for everyone
TypeWireless in-ear
Battery lifeUp to 8 hours per charge; up to 28 hours with the case
Noise cancellingNo

What you need to know: Inexpensive, compact, and wireless—what more do you need? These earbuds come with useful extras, like a compact case with an integrated ring for clipping onto a bag or keys, as well as up to 28 hours of claimed total playtime with the case. They’re also IPX4-rated for sweat and water resistance, making them a handy option for workouts and rainy commutes.

Why we like them: According to Greenwald, these performed reasonably well in Lab tests considering their low price point. Although he didn’t find them to be the most comfortable pair, he appreciates their wireless design, multipoint pairing, a stay-aware mode, and EQ presets through the Skullcandy app. Plus, a 10-minute rapid charge provides up to two hours of playtime.

JBL Vibe Beam 2

Pros

  • Active noise cancellation
  • Up to 40 hours of total battery life with ANC off
  • Multipoint connection
  • Four microphones for calls
  • Rapid charging

Cons

  • Up to 8 hours of battery life per charge with ANC on
TypeWireless in-ear
Battery lifeUp to 10 hours per charge with ANC off; up to 8 hours with ANC on; up to 40 hours total with ANC off
Noise cancellingYes

What you need to know: Available in four shades, these earbuds come with active noise cancellation and multipoint connection, making these earbuds versatile for commuting, calls, and everyday listening. They’re rated IP54 for dust and water resistance, and offer up to 40 hours of claimed total playtime with ANC off.

Why we like them: You get a lot of useful features for the price, including multipoint connection for switching between two Bluetooth devices and four microphones for clearer calls. The JBL Headphones app lets you choose or customize an EQ, and a 10-minute charge provides up to three hours of playtime. Just keep in mind that battery life drops to up to eight hours per charge with ANC on, which should suffice for most listeners.

Pros

  • Up to 100 hours of claimed battery life with ANC off
  • Bluetooth multipoint pairing
  • Wired listening option with a 3.5 mm cable
  • Interchangeable ear cushions
  • Comfortable, lightweight feel

Cons

  • Sound quality not as refined as more premium over-ear paris
TypeWireless over-ear
Battery lifeUp to 100 hours with ANC off; up to 43 hours with ANC on
Noise cancellingYes

What you need to know: You don’t have to pay a premium for comfortable, over-ear headphones. This model from CMF includes a feature set that’s unusual for the price, including active noise cancellation and up to 100 hours of claimed battery life with ANC off. They also work wirelessly or with a 3.5 mm cable and support multipoint pairing, so you can connect to two devices at once.

Why we like them: “These look really cool,” said Greenwald, who also found them comfortable and relatively lightweight. He also liked the tactile controls, including a scroll wheel for volume control and a dedicated bass control slider. The interchangeable ear cushions add a welcome touch of personalization and can help extend the headphones’ style life, but what really impressed him is the claimed 100-plus-hour battery life.

If you’re looking for a wireless pick with noise cancellation, our experts also recommend the Nothing Ear 3a.

Pros

  • Stylish, retro-inspired design
  • Extremely lightweight and comfortable according to testers
  • Foldable design
  • No battery or charging required

Cons

  • No built-in mics for calls
  • Open design provides little noise isolation and can let sound leak
TypeWired on-ear
Battery lifeN/A
Noice cancellingNo

What you need to know: These retro-style on-ear headphones fold up for easy carrying and use an open-air design that lets you hear your surroundings. Their lightweight frame and adjustable temporal pads are designed to relieve pressure around the ears, while the wired connection means there’s no battery to charge.

Why we like them: Greenwald isn’t the only one obsessed with how trendy these are. I also loved their old-school vibe. “They’re somewhere between a utilitarian headphone and a style item,” he said. On top of being incredibly stylish and very comfortable on the ears, they’re super lightweight and barely noticeable on your head. The ear cushions are interchangeable and available in several colors, and their mobility adds to the comfort. Greenwald also liked the audio quality for the price, calling them a good fit for casual listening on a commute or as an accessory for a night out. He did notice some low-end distortion, though, and said the sound isn’t customizable. They also don’t feature built-in mics, so you can’t use them to make calls.

For a wireless version, consider the Koss Porta Pro Wireless.

Pros

  • Great sound quality
  • Comfortable design
  • Intuitive on-ear controls
  • Effective noise cancellation

Cons

  • Sound quality not as impressive as other Jabra earbuds

Jabra earbuds have performed well in previous Media & Tech Lab tests and the Elite 4 are no exception. From a sleek design available in four colors to super comfortable silicone tips and an instantaneous Bluetooth connection to your smartphone, this pair has everything most people are looking for in earbuds. On top of crystal-clear sound quality, we love that these feature active noise cancellation (ANC) for times when you’re commuting or traveling and want to block out noise. “The noise canceling features helped enhance my listening experience – I felt like the sound quality was much better than other earbuds I’ve used because of this,” says one tester.

Each earbud is equipped with an on-ear button that’s extremely easy to press when you want to stop a song or switch to transparency mode; our pros found the on-ears buttons much easier to use than some on-ear touch controls we’ve tried. We also like that they feature 22 hours of playtime with the boost of the charging case and you can extend that up to 28 when ANC is off, according to Jabra. An IP55 rating means that though we wouldn’t recommend dropping these in a lake, they should be completely fine at the gym or in a light rain shower.

Several reviewers also pointed out that they also liked the appearance of the earbuds (especially the lavender color) as well as the case’s slim, lightweight design and matte finish, though some do mention that the earbuds weren’t a perfect fit for their ears.

Pros

  • Fantastic value
  • Water-resistant
  • Available in various colors

Cons

  • Case doesn’t store battery power
  • Doesn’t feature noise cancellation

Who knew you could find wireless earbuds under $50? Our pros like this pair from Skullcandy if you’re looking for fantastic value and easy set up. While these earbuds don’t offer the same sound quality or rich features as more premium sets, our pros were still impressed by how comfortable they felt while wearing them and love that they’re sweat-resistant, according to the brand. The case could feel sturdier but we appreciate how it’s super lightweight and compact enough to slide into your pocket.

An on-ear button on both earbuds lets you pause or play music with a quick press. Even though we’re bummed that these can only be charged via micro-USB, they’re fortunately packed with 12 hours of battery life to get you through the entire day. Just keep in mind that the case doesn’t store any battery power so what you see is what you get.

Pros

  • Extremely secure fit
  • Long battery life
  • Waterproof

Cons

  • Bulky case
  • Doesn’t feature noise cancellation

These wireless earbuds from JBL were made for running, hiking and even surfing. An IP68 rating means that they’ve been tested to withstand water submersion for 30 minutes up to three feet. While we haven’t taken these for a swim yet, the earbuds felt extremely secure when shaking our heads around thanks to a tight fit and hooks that go around your ears. Though the design might feel a bit tight at first and the carrying case is larger than we’d like, we found on-ear controls to be some of the most responsive of all budget earbuds.

Switching from “Ambient Aware” mode, which helps you stay aware of your surroundings, to “Talk Thru” mode, which functions a bit like active noise cancellation, was intuitive. We also found it easy to start and stop music from the earbuds, and love that you get up to 50 hours of play time, according to JBL. If, however, you want true noise cancellation and even better sound quality, our pros suggest upgrading to the JBL Live Pro 2 for an extra $50.

Apple AirPods (2nd Generation)

Pros

  • Great sound quality
  • Seamless integration with Apple products
  • Decent battery life
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Doesn’t feature active noise cancellation

The Apple AirPods (Gen 2) may not be the latest AirPods, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth considering. Not only are these earbuds significantly cheaper than other AirPods, but they connect almost instantly to Apple devices like your iPhone, making them super easy to use. Some users even prefer the Gen 2’s longer stems to some newer AirPods, finding them more comfortable and easier to secure inside ears. “They feel very comfortable and I like that they don’t have squishy silicone, which I find uncomfortable,” says GH Senior Product Analyst Emma Seymour.

Keep in mind that this pair isn’t water-resistant and doesn’t feature active noise cancellation so you’ll still be able to hear office banter in the background, but our pros find the audio quality excellent. We also like how you get up to 24 hours of listening with the charging case so you won’t have to worry about running out of power anytime soon, and the case itself is sleek, lightweight and compact. “I like that they charge quickly and pair across devices seamlessly so I can swap them on for a phone call with minimal disruption,” says Deputy Editor Sarah Wharton.

Pros

  • Comfortable fit
  • Supports wireless charging
  • Good sound quality
  • Fantastic battery life

Cons

  • On-ear controls could be more responsive

Take these noise-canceling Anker earbuds with you to the office or on vacation to block out chit chat and distractions. With 50 hours of listening and 10 hours on a single charge, you won’t even need your charging cable. On top of impressive battery life, we found that this model was comfy and secure when inside the ear. On-ear controls were fairly intuitive (though could be more responsive) and the sound quality was excellent for the price. Plus, we love the sturdy, attractive case that’s super compact and unlike many other budget earbuds it supports wireless charging.

Pros

  • Super comfortable
  • Features auto-start and stop feature
  • Sleek, portable design

Cons

  • Sound quality could be better

Pop the super sleek PistonBuds Pro into your ears and start listening to your favorite playlist. In our tests Bluetooth pairing was instant and we found the earbuds' compact size more comfortable than other earbuds. We love the design of the small, lightweight case and that the earbuds are IPX5 rated so you don’t have to panic if it starts raining.

Though the sound quality leaves something to be desired and the bass isn’t as rich as other budget earbuds, we like that these feature an auto-stop feature that pauses your music automatically when you take a bud out of your ear (and restarts it when you put it back). You can also use on-ear tap controls to make adjustments, though these could be a bit more responsive.

Pros

  • Great noise cancelling
  • Responsive touch controls
  • Supports wireless charging

Cons

  • Could be more comfortable

These earbuds were some of the most impressive on this list for their noise-canceling capabilities. Just touch the stem of the earbuds to alternative between three modes: ambient sound (great for having conversations and being aware of surroundings), normal and ANC. With the active noise cancellation on, the earbuds did a great job of blocking out external noise. Not only were touch controls responsive, but our pros found the sound quality to be solid. We also like that you get a total of 45 hours of playtime and that wireless charging is supported, though we wish the earbuds' design felt slightly more comfortable.

Our pros found these to be extremely comfortable and secure, and we appreciate that you can easily switch between active noise cancellation and transparency mode depending on whether you want to hear background noise or not. On-ear controls were fairly responsive, though we do think battery life could be a bit better. While the case is compact and lightweight, it could be sturdier.

Pros

  • Great value
  • Good sound quality

Cons

  • Battery life could be better
  • Bulky design

These earbuds are bulkier in design than other models featured on this list, but they surprised us with their great sound quality and rich bass. On-ear controls were fairly responsive and an IPX4 rating makes these a good choice for workouts that may get a bit sweaty. Unfortunately, these don’t support active noise canceling but we found that they isolated against noise fairly well thanks to their larger design. Available in a variety of colors, these wireless earbuds feature up to 20 hours of battery life and their price is hard to beat.

How we tested the best earbuds under $100

double line break

The audio experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have evaluated headphones and earbuds for decades.

To find the best options under $100, we assess each model for ease of setup and use, sound quality, comfort, connectivity, and features such as battery life and noise cancellation, when applicable. We evaluate how easily wireless models pair with Bluetooth and how intuitive their controls are. We also consider durability, including resistance to drops and water when relevant. Consumer tester feedback helps us understand how each product performs in everyday use, including its sound, comfort, and design. In our most recent evaluation, we assessed more than 30 headphones and earbuds, then selected the models that fit this guide’s under-$100 price range.

What to look for when shopping for earbuds under $100

double line break

✔️ Battery life and charging: For wireless earbuds and headphones, check both the playback time per charge and the extra listening time provided by the case, if there is one. Battery life can vary depending on volume and features in use; active noise cancellation, for example, may shorten it. Wired models don’t need charging, so battery life won’t apply.

✔️ Noise cancellation: Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones and sound processing to reduce certain background noises. It can be especially helpful on commutes or flights, though it won’t block every sound. Some models also have a transparency or ambient mode that lets you hear more of what’s around you.

✔️ Connectivity: Check how a pair connects to your devices. Wireless headphones and earbuds use Bluetooth, while wired models may connect through USB-C or a 3.5 mm audio jack. Make sure the connection is compatible with your phone, computer, or other device. Some phones may require an adapter for wired headphones.

✔️ Water resistance: If you plan to wear earbuds while exercising or outdoors, check whether they have an IP rating. The first digit indicates protection from solid particles like dust, while the second indicates protection from water. A higher digit indicates a higher level of protection; an “X” means that rating wasn’t provided. Water resistance varies by product and doesn’t mean a pair is waterproof.

✔️ Comfort and fit: Comfort is personal, so consider the design you’re most likely to enjoy. Earbuds with silicone tips often include multiple sizes to help you find a secure fit, while open-ear earbuds don’t seal the ear canal. On-ear headphones rest on your ears, and over-ear models surround them. If possible, try a pair on before buying.

✔️ Controls: Headphones and earbuds may use buttons, touch controls, dials, or sliders to manage playback, calls, and volume. Some also let you switch between ANC and transparency modes. Controls vary by model, so look for ones that seem intuitive and easy to reach.
