Sweet tooths and online shoppers, it's time to check your kitchen cabinets for a potential danger: Ghirardelli Chocolate Company has announced a recall of some of its powdered drink mixes as they may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to news distributed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall stems from a broader powdered milk recall issued by California Dairies, Inc., a supplier whose ingredient was used in certain Ghirardelli powdered drink products, according to the announcement.

Here's everything you need to know.

What Ghiradelli products are affected?

The Ghirardelli recall, announced on April 27 and published by the FDA on April 28, includes a variety of powdered beverage mixes. That includes chocolate-flavored and classic white frappe mixes, vanilla frappe mixes, mocha and white mocha frappe mixes, frozen hot cocoa frappe mixes, and premium hot cocoa pouches.

The good news for everyday grocery shoppers is that most of the affected products were sold in large, bulk formats meant for food service and institutional use—which reduces the chances that they might have ended up in your home. However, the company noted that some products may also have been available to shoppers to buy through e-commerce platforms—though the announcement did not specify which platforms.

Dozens of lot numbers and “best by” dates are involved; the full list is extensive. So if you think you might have purchased any of these products, check your packaging carefully and compare your specific details against those named in the FDA recall notice.

Why is this recall happening?

According to the FDA, the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.

Symptoms can include diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

While most healthy people recover from Salmonella infections without treatment, they can be more severe in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Fortunately, Ghirardelli said no illnesses or injuries have been reported so far, and that the recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution.
