Pistachio butter has become one of the buzzier nut spreads on grocery shelves. However, if you're a fan of Walmart's Bettergoods line and have been slathering it on your toast in the morning, there's a new recall you need to know about.

What’s being recalled?

On August 3, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a voluntary recall notice from Botticelli Foods, based in Melville, NY, which includes one lot of Bettergoods Pistachio Nut Butter. The recalled jars are 6.7 ounces (190 grams), carry UPC 194346207961, along with the Lot Code LB028ACP04. The expiration date, January 28, 2027, is also printed on the jar. No other lots of the nut butter are affected.

According to the recall notice, the product was manufactured by Gustibus Alimentari Srl, a company out of Assoro, Italy, and distributed exclusively to Walmart stores in 19 states, including Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Washington, and Wyoming.

Why is this pistachio butter being recalled?

The nut butter is being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination. According to the FDA notice, the issue surfaced after Walmart learned on July 17 that the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services had tested three jars of the product during a routine inspection at a Walmart store, and all three came back positive for Salmonella.

The FDA notice further warned that Salmonella can cause "serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems."

It noted that generally healthy people often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. "In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis," the FDA added. However, no illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the product so far.
