When it comes to a classic pair of white shoes, most people would probably think of the Adidas Sambas—and our pros at the Textiles Lab agree (after all, they named it the best overall white sneaker). But Hilary Duff is showing off another style from the brand that caught my eye: The Adidas Japan shoes.
I thought I might’ve been done with my Adidas collection; I have my 10-year-old Stan Smiths and Superstars from college, and more recently, I purchased the Adidas Taekwondos. However, after seeing a photo of Hilary running in Los Angeles wearing this particular design, I’m considering adding it to my wardrobe.
We don’t have full context on what’s happening here, but I think it’s safe to assume from her outfit that Hilary was out and about running some errands. She paired her sneakers with a loose white button-up, a black workout set, a black saddle bag, green sunglasses (love!), and some longer crew socks.
Now, the Adidas Japan shoes aren’t anything new. In fact, per the shoe listing on Adidas’ site, they were originally designed in 1964 in Japan ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. But the brand recently revived the style, and it stands apart from the Samba with its slimmer silhouette and lower profile.
According to the Adidas, the Japan shoes are generally lightweight, thanks to an unstructured upper and a barely-there sole (the Sambas have a fairly chunkier base). The Japan shoes also feel more retro in design, and they have perforations all over the front—for style and for airflow.
You can get the Adidas Japan shoes in up to 18 color combinations at the the time of writing (I’ve included a few of my favorites below and some are even on sale)—and you can choose between some leather and suede options. They’re unisex, but you can get them in women’s sizes 5 through 15.
Just when I thought I was done with my sneaker collection… but hey, at least this is a classic style I know I won’t get tired of!
