The cast of The Rookie appeared on a panel for San Diego Comic-Con on July 25.
Chenford’s engagement and the dramatic aftermath came up during the conversation.
Actress Melissa O’Neil spoke about the moment and shared her thoughts about Chenford.
This story contains major spoilers from The Rookie season 8 finale.
It's not every day the star of a hit TV show apologizes for their character's storyline—but that's exactly what Melissa O'Neil is doing for The Rookie.
The actress, who plays Lucy Chen, sat down for a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25 with her co-stars Nathan Fillion (who portrays John Nolan), Eric Winter (who plays Tim Bradford), Mekia Cox (who portrays Nyla Harper), and Richard T. Jones (who plays Wade Grey).
During the panel, fans asked about the dramatic season 8 finale, which saw Tim and Lucy (a.k.a. “Chenford”) get engaged. But the celebration didn’t last long: Another duo promptly abducts the couple and leaves the show on a major cliffhanger.
Melissa jokingly apologized for the moment.
“We will send you some magnesium to calm you down,” she said, according to People. “Have a nice little bit of tea. We are so sorry for that. But also, thank you for going along for the ride.”
The actress added that she understood everyone’s alarm.
“My heart went out to everyone who was deeply invested because I was like, this is gonna be hard,” she said.
The engagement aftermath will almost definitely be explored when season 9 of The Rookie returns this winter on ABC. And while we wait for new episodes, it’s worth remembering that Chenford exists purely as a result of the show’s fans.
“[The couple was] never written on the show—remember, Lucy dated [John] Nolan in the beginning,” Eric told Good Housekeeping in February 2026. “Even though Tim and Lucy were never structured to be a couple, the fans created the story in their minds that he’s a good guy and he’s broken and really cares about her. The fans built this into something that made the writers listen, and they crafted this amazing slow burn of a story.”
Can the show return soon, please???
