• In September, the FDA announced a recall of Great Value frozen Organic Triple Berry Blend sold at Walmart due to potential E. coli O145 contamination linked to earlier blueberry recalls affecting 16 states.
  • The recalled 10 oz packages have UPC 7874211226 and lot code 6040 01-6 with "Best If Used By" date of February 9, 2028. Consumers should check their freezers and avoid consuming the product.
  • E. coli causes severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, with potential serious complications for vulnerable populations. No illnesses reported yet; consumers should discard product or return to Walmart for full refund.

Back in July, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of frozen blueberries. On September 3, the FDA published a company announcement that includes the addition of one lot of Great Value frozen Organic Triple Berry Blend (10 oz) because of potential contamination with E. Coli bacteria.

Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., of San Carlos, Chile shipped the berry blend product to Walmart stores in the following 16 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin.

The product was recalled as a precaution after traceback information linked its blueberries to the original recall. The good news: No illnesses associated with this specific recall have been reported.

How can E. Coli make you sick?

The company announcement states: “E. coli O145 is a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) that can cause illness characterized by severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. While most healthy individuals recover within a week, some infections may result in a serious complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), particularly in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you should call your doctor if you suspect you have an E. Coli infection, and if you have the following specific symptoms:

● Diarrhea or vomiting lasting for longer than two days

● Bloody stool

● Bloody urine

● A fever higher than 102°F

● Signs of dehydration

● Signs of hemolytic uremic syndrome
