Nearly 50 years and more than 1 million copies sold later, we’re bringing back one of the most beloved cookbooks in Good Housekeeping history: the original Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook.

First published in 1980, the cookbook quickly became a staple in kitchens across the country, offering home cooks 1,400 thoroughly tested recipes paired with the step-by-step illustrations that gave the book its name.

“Right now, we’re seeing home cooks embrace everything from vintage recipes to nostalgic dinner-party menus, but they’re also returning to the dishes that have stood the test of time—not just the latest trend making the rounds on social media,” says Good Housekeeping senior food editor Susan Choung.

She calls the cookbook the “analog antidote to the algorithm,” filled with timeless recipes readers can return to again and again.

“The Banana Cream Pie is a perfect example,” she says. “It doesn't feel dated in the least—just beautifully honed, with decades of kitchen wisdom baked into every step.”

The rerelease faithfully reproduces the original 1980 edition, preserving its look and feel. The book features 1,400 Test Kitchen–approved recipes, from party-ready canapés like curried tuna in choux pastry puffs, Watercress–Cream Cheese Triangles, and Smoked Salmon Squares to comforting classics like Beef Bourguignon, Chicken with Orange Peel Szechuan Style, and Manicotti, which has a cheesy filling wrapped in homemade crepes then baked beneath a savory meat sauce.

You’ll also find vintage desserts and classic cocktails—including an ice-cold martini—that feel just as at home on today’s table as they did nearly 50 years ago. The step-by-step illustrations and clear instructions make it approachable for both new and experienced cooks.
