If you use prescription eye drops, check your medicine cabinet ASAP. There’s a large-scale, ongoing recall across the United States for one type.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), more than 2 million bottles of Prednisolone Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension eye drops were voluntarily recalled on June 4, due to the possibility that a foreign substance is in the product.

On June 30, the FDA took the further step of issuing an enforcement report that gives this recall a Class II classification. Class II recalls mean that if you use or are exposed to a recalled product, you could suffer temporary, treatable health problems that are probably not serious in the long run.

Which eye drops are being recalled?

The recalled eye drops are labeled on each bottle as prednisoLONE Acetate Ophthalmic Suspension, USP, 1%—prescription only, sterile.

According to the Mayo Clinic, these eye drops are used to relieve “the redness, itching, and swelling caused by eye infections and other conditions.”

The recall affects three bottle sizes: 5 mL, 10 mL, and 15 mL. The national drug code for each recalled bottle size is:

  • 5 mL: NDC 70748-332-02
  • 10 mL: NDC 70748-332-03
  • 15 mL: NDC 70748-332-04

What to do if you have a bottle of the recalled eye drops

If you believe you have been using a recalled bottle, contact your doctor immediately for advice on whether you should get a new prescription.

The FDA didn’t list any specific information about how the recalled eye drops might affect users’ health specifically, but if you develop any eye-related symptoms, you want to let your doctor know about that right away.
