The best affordable haircare for 2026, as tested by the GHI
The best shampoos, conditioners and more under £10, chosen with the help of 3,200 readers

The Good Housekeeping Institute really comes into its own when you're looking for high-payoff, penny-saving products. That includes the best affordable haircare.
While expensive electricals (such as Dyson’s Airwrap) and high-tech, ingredient-led formulations (we're talking Olaplex’s bond-building treatments) are usually worth the investment, the basics can often be done well on a budget when it comes to both skincare and haircare.
The tried and tested products below offer salon-worthy sleekness for a slice of the price. In fact, they all come in at under £10, meaning you can save your money for those more lavish self-care rituals, like getting your balayage re-done or trying a Claudia Winkleman-inspired glossy fringe.
Here are some of the best affordable hair products you can buy, including cheap shampoos and conditioners, as chosen by the GHI and over 3,200 panel members:

How we test affordable haircare
We recruited over 3,000 readers to help our Good Housekeeping Institute experts test hundreds of haircare products across different categories — from moisture-quenching and curl-enhancing, to hair growth products and grease-busting formulations.
To help you save, we’ve collated their best budget buys in one handy shopping list, as well as linking out to the fuller roundups, should you wish to spend a bit more on certain items.
You’ll also find our test of own-brand shampoos below, so you can stock up on bathroom basics while doing your weekly shop. For this test, we trialled 59 brands of shampoo over a period of four weeks, helped by over 800 panel members.
Hair types ranged from straight to kinky/coiled hair, and testers gave feedback on ease of use, packaging design, fragrance and product performance. In the lab, our experts used the Dia-Stron machine (a tress-testing system) to measure the smoothness of the hair after being washed with each product.
Maria is our Beauty and Grooming Testing Manager, and since joining in mid-2022, she has managed the testing for mutiple categories including scalp scrubs, collagen supplements and retinol serums. In addition to her master's degree in chemical engineering and a diploma in cosmetic science, she recently received her MBA from the London College of Fashion, focusing on case studies within the beauty industry. Prior to joining the company, she worked within the global technical team at the Estee Lauder Companies for over six years, collaborating with the chemists and engineers to launch luxury beauty products at scale and to quality. She has also worked as a formulation scientist within the pharmaceutical industry and takes this evidence based approach into all her product testing.
