I have a rather soft spot for polka dots. The dotty print is the perfect wardrobe staple come spring, and it transitions into summer with chic ease - but it can also be worn year-round. It’s a timeless favourite loved by a plethora of A-listers, from the Princess of Wales (who has a strong affinity for a spotty dress) to TV presenter Cat Deeley, whose Zara skirt-and-blouse co-ord caught my eye as soon as I spotted her wearing it on This Morning.

Yet, despite its enduring appeal, I often wonder if it’s time the print had a refresh. Nothing too obnoxious - just something to make the motif feel slightly revived. Luckily, the high street knows a thing or two about blending new trends with classic styles - lest we forget M&S’s blue-and-brown take on the dotted print - and Next has an excellent dress that does just that. In fact, I liked it so much I had to snap it up myself.

The Polka Dot Ruffle V-Neck Midi Dress is a brilliant example of updating an ageless staple without losing the appeal of the original. Designed with larger-than-usual classic black-and-white dots, it stands out from the other midi and maxi polka-dot frocks on the market. It also features tiered detailing - a trending yet distinctive element that immediately caught my eye and made me think it would be the perfect choice for the Easter weekend and upcoming spring bank holidays.

Not only that, but I also found the sheer sleeves particularly striking, adding a touch of airiness to the swishy silhouette. But don’t worry - they’re not so sheer that they reveal too much, and they still provide enough coverage to feel confident. For me, that added benefit meant my shoulders would be protected from sun exposure as the warmer weather finally begins to return.

Of course, as with most dresses, styling it is effortless. Simply choose the shoes and bag you’d like to pair with it. I think my favourite ballet flats would look great, but a pair of Mary Janes works just as well. For more formal occasions, opt for a kitten heel you can comfortably wear all night long without sacrificing polish.
