If you couldn’t already tell, The Princess of Wales is one of our biggest style inspirations here at Good Housekeeping. Whenever a new image of her arises, fashion fans everywhere are scanning with a rather intense eye, taking notes on everything from her accessories to her shoes.
But, it's not just new sightings that sprout outfit inspiration. Even pictures of her outfits from years ago still remain prevalent in the royal fashion conversation, in particular, a long tartan coat in navy and blue in a structured style. She wore the coat on a royal visit to Scotland, paying homage to the country's heritage pattern.
Completely custom made, the dress was designed by Chris Kerr, a bespoke tailor in London and The Princesses longtime stylist. What makes this coat so special, though, is that the royal actually helped design it herself.
Naturally, we started searching for lookalikes. While her coat is truly a one-of-a-kind piece, I found similar alternatives that have the same timeless elegance. They may not all share the same ankle length and vibrant blue hue, but they’re a great start.
The Princess also proved that styling a statement piece is easier than you think. You could immediately tell she wore a black turtleneck underneath the coat, and the peek of fabric at the neckline added a polished layer to the look.
In other photos from that day, you can see the rest of her outfit, which included a chocolate fair isle sweater, black tights, and a long black skirt that matched the length of her coat. She also wore sleek, high heeled boots.
