Yesterday I got talking to a woman at my local Nobody’s Child store. In her early 40s, she had just decided to buy a green gingham smocked top with puff sleeves and told me: “It looked so good – who knew I could wear smocking at my age!”
Which got me to thinking, you never know how good something might look until you try it. Stepping out of your comfort zone is exciting, change is fun – and with spring around the corner, one carefully chosen new top can give you the opportunity for a refresh in both style and mood.
Smocking - or shirring, when elastic rather than hand-stitching is used - is one of the prettiest and mood-boosting key details I’m seeing come through for spring 2026. Its popping up as a defining detail on the waistline of skirts and balloon trousers, but its most effective use is to prettify tops and blouses making them easy, romantic updates to wear with your favourite jeans or relaxed fit trousers.
The excellently designed and well-priced shirred tops I found at Next, which are available all the way up to a size 26, are a perfect example of this: you might think they are not for you, but its thanks to the smocking that you can be ensured a flattering fit.
Next’s smocked tops come in two styles, and both are long-sleeved with ruching details at the cuffs. The first is button fronted top in two patterns - a ditsy floral, and a painterly vintage floral.
The second is a more glamorous top with an overblown graphic plaid in the colour combination of the season: khaki/brown and pale blue (see matching trainers here) which is ideal for evening. It also comes in white.
These four tops prove that smocking is not just pretty and youthful looking, they are also flattering, chic, and not just for kids. Why? Because the elasticated ruching makes the top fitted without being tight, accentuating and creating shape in a subtle way, with the offset of a fuller sleeve to create proportion.
If you are seeking a single style update to put a spring in your step, I highly recommend swapping a plain shirt of T-shirt for one of these tops.
If it worked for the woman I met in Nobody’s Child (I included her top here, too) it will work for you.
