When it comes to dressing up, I want to look impossibly chic, but I also want it to be effortless (‘Oh this? I just threw it on'). I don't want tops I'm constantly pulling up or down, a restrictive waistband (no party indigestion here, thank you) or anything I feel self-conscious in.
So, when I find a party piece that is comfy, elegant and flattering, I hang on to it for dear life. One item that's become a staple in my wardrobe when I hit November and the season of socialising is suddenly upon is a velvet midi skirt. Worn with a fine knit and kitten heels or a chunky jumper and boots or ballet flats, it's always party-ready and elegant.
And this year, I've spotted a new midi I need in my wardrobe. FatFace's new-in Esme Velvet Midi Skirt comes in three autumn shades, has a pretty lace trim and is a relatively affordable £69 – way cheaper than the similar styles I've been eyeing up Reformation.
It looks gorgeous in this rich, olive green.
I would wear it with a fine grey knit and some pointed toe mules, like these comfy M&S ones below (I have them in zebra print already).
It's a look you can wear in the office when it gets closer to Christmas or out for a fancy lunch or dinner at any time of year.
The Esme skirt also comes in this season's most popular shade: bitter chocolate brown if you prefer. It's the new black for party season.
It looks great styled with this textured red, V-neck sweater. We'd wear it slightly oversized and slouchy with a glimpse of lacy bra underneath.
And it would look gorgeous with these pointed toe ballet pumps in a glossy burgundy.
No aching soles here. Because the best party looks are the ones you can stay out all night in.
