If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably been heavily reliant on your jeans to carry you through the past few months. But with spring finally here, I'm now on the hunt for something far floatier. Enter: balloon trousers. The airy, lightweight answer to springtime dressing.
Think of them as the natural evolution of your trusty barrel-leg jeans. Characterised by a billowing leg, they're designed with a relaxed, sculptural shape for easy wearability. You'll typically find that styles are crafted from linen, cotton or even satin finishes - all far less rigid than your usual denim.
Not only that, but their floaty silhouette makes them unbelievably comfortable without scarifying style. I’ll be wearing my own pair to the office, because if something feels as comfy as joggers but looks as chic as trousers, it’s a win all round, especially for my daily commute into London.
Whether you’re an all-neutrals kind of person or like to inject a pop of colour into your wardrobe, the high street is brimming with a plethora of fashion-forward options.
M&S, as always is an excellent place to start. Their take on the billowy trend is crafted from 100% linen and comes in both white and black, making the style incredibly easy to slot into any wardrobe. Pintuck detailing at the waist adds a chic, polished finish, balancing the cool appeal of elasticated cuffs.
For a pop of colour, turn to Nobody’s Child, which offers a silky satin pair in a soft sage green - a muted hue that’s just as easy to style as a neutral.
Alternatively, Mint Velvet have a pair that's available in both a vibrant cornflower blue, as well as a romantic red.
Or, if you’re hoping to grab a bargain, look no further than Tu. The supermarket-turned-fashion hero offers a slinky jersey pair in chocolate brown. The drawstrings, elevated with gold detailing, bring a luxe touch that feels far more expensive than its £16 price tag.
As for styling, lean into full-float with an airy blouse, or a classic boxy white tee. Shift the mood with your choice of footwear — sandals for spring getaways, sneakerinas for weekend errands, or a chic (and comfortable) pair of flats for the office.
