The clocks have sprung forward and the trees are scattering confetti everywhere, which can only mean one thing: it’s time for us to put away our winter clothes. At last!
So goodbye to you, chunky knits. See you in seven, (or hopefully eight) months, coats. Scarves and hats, who even are you? My vacuum storage bags are out, and ready for me to compress the lot of them and put them where the sun does not shine.
This is all great. A mood-lifter of an easter weekend chore if ever there was one. But it does beg the question for all of us: without our knits to call on, what are we going to wear on our top halves now?
Well, I’ve solved it, and it’s this: a spring jumper, and the rules are extremely simple. It must be short-sleeved, have a collar, a V-neck or a few buttons, and come in a pretty colour. That's it.
Why a spring knit? Because right now, it’s still too cool for a T-shirt and too warm for a proper jumper. This is the piece that prettily bridges the gap, and well, there are so many well designed and affordable ones around, it's easy to buy into too.
Look to Mango and John Lewis for a soft yellow spring knit, Marks & Spencer for one in an icy blue cashmere blend, and a pretty pink version.
Next has theirs khaki - the pink version is already sold out, but will be back in stock this week. This knit works with all styles of jeans, easy pull-on trousers, midi skirts and sharper tailoring, adding polish rather than slouch.
Given how many spring outfit dilemmas it solves, you’ll soon wonder what you ever did without it.
