It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that the key to a great wardrobe lies in a well-considered selection of capsule staples. You know the kind: key pieces that will see you through countless occasions - be they pared-back or polished - and carry you seamlessly across the seasons, even with Britain’s fluctuating (and rather unreliable) temperatures.
Think a pair of tailored black trousers, versatile jeans, and a boxy white tee that fits like a glove and works with everything. That’s not to say, however, that these classics can’t benefit from a modern makeover every now and then. Case in point: Boden. Its Puff Sleeve Oxford shirt (a feminine take on a Savile Row-inspired style) proves that while you can’t go wrong with a timeless piece, a minor refresh can make the style feel brand new.
It’s easy to pinpoint what sets Boden's version apart from more generic counterparts. The charm lies in the shortened puff sleeves, a detail typically found on floaty, floral dresses and spotty blouses. Not only are they visually appealing, but they’re actually surprisingly practical too, feeling far less restrictive than many high-street versions.
Of course, the design still stays true to the defining features of a classic Oxford shirt, the very elements that make it so enduringly appealing. Boasting a traditional collar (Boden’s is ever so slightly oversized for added drama) and a sleek button-down front that works just as well worn loose as it does half-tucked.
Its true brilliance, however, lies in its versatility, and its ability to work seamlessly for a range of occasions. For evenings out, pair it with tailored black trousers and comfortable kitten heels with slingback detailing. For day-to-day wear, I’ll be styling mine with cigarette jeans (approved by the Princess of Wales) and classic Adidas trainers (approved by well dressed women everywhere).
