We're at the fag end of the summer season and, at first glance, stores can look like a sad collection of overlooked hippy tops. Yes, most of the obvious bestsellers have gone. But it's equally true that some of the best pieces have been overlooked and made it to the sale rail.
These days, most of us shop online, and that's where opportunities arise. A poor product photograph, an uninspiring colour that doesn't translate well on screen or simply a price that's been a little too ambitious can mean genuinely brilliant pieces get overlooked.
When those factors combine and a well made, quality wardrobe staple suddenly becomes reduced, that's when you have to zoom in like a sale ninja and buy it.
I do this at least once a year. Last year, I bought a Victoria Beckham tailored jacket reduced from £960 to £333 in the Liberty London sale, and it has turned out to be the best fashion purchase I've made in the last decade.
This selection from M&S isn't Victoria Beckham territory, but after carefully combing through their sale I've found six pieces worth considering if you're looking for a long term wardrobe staple.
I've found a beautifully made bomber jacket that you'll wear year after year, a pair of impeccably cut black Autograph ankle-grazer trousers reduced from £80 to £40, and a pure cotton quilted jacket reduced from £38 to £26 that will become one of those hardworking and mood-enhancing pieces you reach for every spring and autumn to wear with jeans and a jumper underneath.
The all-leather top-handle bag, reduced from £85 to £58, is worth a look. I saw it at M&S today and it's far more modern and chic than the website photography suggests, and though roomy, also tucks well under the arm when it's hooked over your shoulder.
If I had to narrow it down, I'd buy the bomber jacket, the black trousers and the cream leather jacket. Together they have that luxurious yet moden quality I always look for when sale shopping. I can already picture the bag with cream jeans, a crisp white shirt and loafers or ballerina pumps come autumn.
The best sale shopping isn't about buying what's cheap. It's about recognising the pieces you'll still be delighted to own and still be wearing five years from now.
