As a self-confessed dress devotee, I know exactly what I’m looking for. A great dress in my book is flattering, easy and floaty enough to keep me feeling comfortable all day. If it doesn’t make getting dressed feel effortless, it’s not for me.
Thankfully, M&S has ticked every box with its new checked midi dress, which is as chic as it is brilliantly designed.
It had me at first glance, with the checked design immediately catching my eye. The chic, heritage-inspired print is timeless, so I know I’ll be reaching for it for years to come. The soft sandy hue, accented with black and brown checks, feels just as right for summer as it will through autumn.

Take a closer look and you’ll see the print is only half the appeal. I’d even go as far as to say this is one of M&S’s most flattering dresses yet (and I already have quite the collection in my wardrobe).
I know I’m not alone in preferring a little coverage on my upper arms, so dresses with sleeves are always a winner. Here, the flutter sleeves do just that, all while adding to the relaxed, floaty silhouette.
It just gets better and better. The dress features two adjustable ties at the waist, allowing you to cinch it in as much or as little as you like. I’d also argue it’s this thoughtful detail that makes it look far more premium than a high-street buy.
Crafted from a cotton-rich fabric, it feels every bit as premium, too. The cotton gives the dress its light, breezy feel and helps create that relaxed silhouette – just look at the way it drapes gently over the chest before falling into the airy skirt.
If, like me, you’re part of the ‘5ft 3in and under’ club, you’ll know that petite shopping doesn’t come easy. Thankfully, this dress is available in short, regular and tall lengths. Extra brownie points for you, M&S.
The styling potential here is endless and the dress will work for months to come.
Right now, while the sun’s still shining, I’d pair it with black kitten heels, slimline sunnies and chunky gold jewellery for a polished and playful look. Come autumn, simply layer a fluffy brown mohair jumper over the top and finish with moto boots and a leather bag.
