There are certain pieces that migrate from menswear staple to womenswear essential, and the rugby polo is easily one of the best examples. Once associated with muddy pitches and University rugby teams, the staple has suddenly become endlessly chic and is now worn by stylish women everywhere.
And its new appeal makes sense: fashion’s obsession with preppy, sporty dressing has made the shirt’s masculine roots feel fresh again for 2026. The best style I’ve seen so far? It comes from M&S.
In their newest clothing drop - which features a conveyor belt of transitional staples - it was the Pure Cotton Rugby Polo Top that instantly caught my eye. At first glance, it might look like a simple striped staple, but you’ll quickly realise that just because it's simple, doesn't mean it's basic, thanks to a crisp white collar and intricate stripe detailing in camel brown, black and white.
The key to making the piece feel polished is to resist styling it like actual sportswear. Instead, treat yours as you would a great striped knit: half tuck it into wide leg or barrel leg jeans and add loafers for weekends once the mercury drops.
For now though, while we’re still in the final stretch of summer, wear the polo with a pair of linen shorts for a look that suits the climate, and finish with crochet style ballet flats in sleek black or brown for a polished finishing touch.
