While you might be reaching for transitional staples that make dressing for the gap between summer and autumn easy, there's no reason why you can't start jumping straight into cosy season now. I myself have already started reaching for a dark denim jacket of mine - something I'm tempted to wear with my favourite red cardigan if it remains nippy tomorrow.
But, there's one staple I was surprised to see return this year, and it's the kilt. The heritage style has had quite the fashionable makeover over the past year and, if you can remember, became something of an autumnal go-to last season. That can largely be chalked up to Claudia Winkleman, who swore by the piece on The Traitors. Yet, you needn't spend a hefty amount on her exact Le Kilt style, because Next has a brilliant version that smartly combines two seasonal trends in one, without either clashing with the other.
Designed with all the key components of a kilt - pleated detailing, a double-buckle belt and a below-the-knee midi length - it comes in a 2-in-1 design that combines two checked patterns. One is a classic, bold tartan, while the other is a plaid pattern reminiscent of grammar school skirts. The catch? Well, there is none - and I'd argue it's a piece that could work in almost any wardrobe, despite it's outlandish concept.
If you are looking to dress for the whiplash weather this season, wear it with a crisp white boxy tee and either maroon block-heel boots or crochet Mary Jane flats. Both are great choices and would look brilliant with a lightweight suede jacket layered on top.
Then, for colder weather, style it with black leather-look knee-high boots and a cardigan to combat the chill. Perhaps even add a scarf coat on top for a final touch that's both chic and practical.
