As we head deeper into autumn, we're all looking for useful yet sleek clothes that make pulling an outfit together easy. But who says everyday style can't be playful, too?
If, like me, you're partial to a sequin, and blast Jolene and Islands in the Stream through your earbuds when the mood takes you, these M&S shirts with dash of Nashville could be the answer.
Taking their cue from the late, great Dolly Parton's unapologetic take on dressing, M&S has scattered some Western magic over a blue checked shirt and a cropped denim shirt with coin-sized silver buttons.
Both are finished with shiny floral embellishments that owe more to the Blue Ridge Mountains than the Chilterns.
Neither is a traditional cowboy shirt with pearl snaps and embroidered yokes, but they borrow just enough of Dolly's attitude to make them a properly jazzy switch up from a plain shirt.
Now, I'm firmly in the camp that believes sequins aren't just for Christmas. My own favourite sequin top comes out on repeat every autumn and winter, usually with denim and boots, and these shirts tap into the same mood. Keep them in use for as long as possible, and they'll deliver year after year.
I'd wear either buttoned right up with dark indigo jeans and loafers for daytime, or half-open over a white or navy T-shirt, with a great belt and suede ankle boots at weekends.
The denim shirt also makes an excellent foil to a feminine lace-edged midi skirt paired with kitten heeled mules. Cowboy boots are, of course, also an option, but if you don't want to go all in, see if you've got Cuban heeled ankle boots lurking in your wardrobe, because now is their moment.
