In my time as a fashion journalist, especially as someone with a soft spot for a midi skirt, I'd like to think I've seen them in every iteration. From heritage check styles (which, surprisingly, are now found in circulation year round) to tiered designs in monochrome polka dots, there's something especially chic about the swishy staple that makes it worth adding to my outfit rotation time and time again.
Now, though, one pattern I was surprised to see become so popular is tapestry - a bolder, more intricate take on the prints you've probably become so used to seeing. Inspired by medieval artwork, the historical style is undeniably eye catching, but for 2026, it's less Bayeux Tapestry and more painterly botanical motifs, as Zara's latest midi proves.
As part of Zara's ZW Collection, the midi skirt immediately caught my eye. Designed with an intricate floral motif in the colours of the season, including brown, camel and cream, it's surprisingly understated considering its bold pattern. The print feels especially vintage inspired, reminding me of the wallpaper you'd expect to find lining the walls of a grand country house or an old art gallery. Contrasting piped detailing is another standout feature, adding chic definition to the skirt.
But the best feature of all isn't even the floral design. It's how practical and comfortable it is, courtesy of a wrap fastening at the front that makes it easy to slip on and off. No more awkward shimmying around just to pull the skirt up and down - simply tie it at the side and be on with your day.
As I've mentioned religiously before, a midi skirt is a true wardrobe workhorse that pairs effortlessly with pieces you already own. Stick to black or white boxy T-shirts or lace-trim blouses for a pared back autumn look. Finish with slick ankle boots for practicality on cooler days, or opt for chunky loafers styled with frilly socks for an outfit that feels a little more fashion forward.
