Burgundy has always been one of autumn's most dependable colours. Every year, as soon as September arrives, the rich wine hue returns in the form of cosy knitwear, leather bags and chic outerwear, proving time and time again that some trends never really go out of style.
And this year is no different - one quick stroll down your local high street will reveal burgundy in all forms in display windows. But, rather than relying on colour alone, brands are giving burgundy a fresh feel through modern silhouettes plucked straight from designer brands. One update that's caught my eye? The funnel neck.
By now, you've probably spotted the elevated neckline everywhere, from high end to high street. It's the detail that adds a certain je ne sais quoi to even the simplest jacket, perfect if you're looking for something especially sleek. So, you can imagine how pleased I was to see M&S combine the style with autumn's go-to shade - for a mere £70, that is.
Enter the Suedette Funnel Neck Short Trench Coat, a style that has already started to fly off the shelves. Rather than sticking to and creating another classic trench, the high street hero has reimagined the military staple with a sleek funnel neckline, a soft suede finish and a cropped silhouette, making burgundy seem brand new.
Of course, it still retains the details you'd expect from a trench, for instance, the cuff straps around the sleeves for a polished finish. The adjustable tie belt also adds subtle definition at the waist, making it just as flattering as it is stylish, perfect if sometimes you find that coats swallow your silhouette up.
As for styling, I'd wear it with a boxy white tee, wide leg jeans and brown or black loafers during the day, then swap them for a cosy fluffy knit in mohair or alpaca wool, and a pair of knee high boots for a little extra protection once the autumn chill really sets in.
