Autumn and checks go together like knitwear and boots. Every year, the criss cross motif returns in full force, but this season it feels fresher than ever, appearing on everything from tailored blazers to roomy scarves and swishy dresses. While florals certainly still have their place when it comes to dresses, there's something about a classic checked style that instantly makes you feel more polished.
Of course, M&S (no shock here) has completely nailed the seasonal trend with its Checked Blouson Sleeve Midaxi Dress. Rather than leaning into a traditional shirt dress silhouette, the high street hero has opted for something a little softer this time around.
The round neckline, gently ruched waist and flowing midaxi skirt create an modern, chic silhouette, while the blouson sleeves add just the right amount of volume for a polished finish. Bonus points are in order for the affordable brand as the dress even comes with a cami lining underneath for extra coverage, making it an excellent option for every plan from the office to dinner with friends.
If you know me, you'll know my wardrobe is fairly monochromatic, which makes the colour pairing another reason why I'm such a fan of this frock. Its black and neutral checked pattern feels understated enough to wear year after year, yet still nods to autumn's heritage trend that is in full force for 2026.
I'd style it with chocolate brown boots and a bomber jacket while it's still relatively mild, before swapping in thick tights, sleek loafers and a cosy wool coat when temperatures really begin to drop.
So, if your autumn wardrobe is missing a versatile day to night dress, I'd move quickly. Checks are proving just as popular as ever this season, and with its classic print, flattering shape and timeless appeal, I can't imagine this M&S style staying in stock for long.
