If you’re on the hunt for a jacket that will keep you warm and dry, work with everything you could possibly style it with, and on top of all that look extremely chic, you need a cinch-waist parka.

This mainstay of the military, and beloved menswear style has long been a luxury staple for women, too. The original quiet luxury brand Loro Piana always features one in their collections, as does Ralph Lauren. More recently Victoria Beckham created one for her Gap collaboration, and of course it was the first thing to sell out from the range.

This wool blend tweed cinch-waist parka jacket is £159 from ZW Collection at Zara, and one of four jackets in this style released this week.

This jacket style has come to my attention as a brilliant fashion item for many reasons. First, it's such a classic and useful piece, you might already have one. This is because it features all the things we always want from outerwear: deep pockets, water resistance, a funnel neck and the playful and practical touch of a cinch-able waist. This means you can loosen or pull it in according to how you’re styling the outfit underneath.

Which brings me to Zara who this week have released not one, not two, but four versions of this goes-with-everything jacket. Want to look luxurious and sleek? They have a tweed version with a contrast mustard yellow lining, which can be shown in a peep of colour at the neckline.

Want to channel Kate Moss at Glastonbury? You’ll want the army green one, which not surprisingly is the one selling fastest. Want to look modern and chic? Their beige cinch waist parka will work a treat with modern sportswear. Or what if you want your low-key stylish and very useful? The black one will serve you for every possible need whether for work days or weekends.

Why have they done so many versions? Zara has seen what I have – that this jacket can work whether you’re headed out for a country walk styled with kick flare cords and a fluffy jumper; or with sharp tailoring underneath for work. It has the kind of stylishness that you can make your own.

Zara also know that a jacket with a high neck and a cinched waist creates an elegant and flattering silhouette – one that creates the impression of slimness no matter your size – especially if you wear yours with slim-fit trousers or jeans, or a flowy heritage check skirt.

The final flourish? A pair of knee high or biker style boots will ground and balance this look and have you ready to kick through the autumn leaves in style. You'll likely have a pair of these in your wardrobe too.
