I don't know about you, but once the temperature starts to dip, my wardrobe priorities shift instantly. Instead of reaching for floaty dresses, I find myself wanting pieces that feel comfy enough to wear all day - without sacrificing style. That's why knit dresses always earn a place in my autumn wardrobe, they're one of those staples that require very little thought but always look great.

Zara has long been one of my go-to places to look for elevated basics, and its latest knit midi dress is exactly the sort of piece I'd happily wear on repeat over the next few (chilly) months. It ticks all the boxes of a classic knitted dress, from its bitter chocolate brown shade to the flattering midi length.

But, it's the unique belted detailing that really sets it apart from the rest. Rather than hanging loose, the slim belt, finished with gold tone buckle detailing, nips you in at the waist and gives the otherwise pared back design a much smarter feel.

When it comes to styling, I'd lean into the tonal look with suede boots and a matching brown bag, or, alternatively keep things classic with black knee high boots and a long camel coat (a favourite staple of the Princess of Wales at this time of year). Thanks to the high neckline and softly puffed elbow length sleeves, it already looks polished enough that it needs very little styling.

For me, the best autumn pieces are the ones that work just as well for the office as they do for weekend plans, and this dress is great at doing that. It's comfortable without looking overly casual, timeless without feeling boring, and the clever belted waist gives it a point of difference from the many knitted dresses currently on the high street.

So, if you're looking for one easy piece to see you through the season, I'd put this firmly at the top of the list.
