There are some people who don't follow trends - they create them. Claudia Winkleman falls firmly into that camp. Every week, Celebrity Traitors returns to our screens, and we becomes less concerned with the murders and mind games and far more invested in whatever the BBC game show host is wearing. Her wardrobe has become something of a masterclass in chic British dressing with a cool, gothic twist, and tonight's episode of The Traitors is no exception.
While bomber jackets and heritage prints have dominated much of her wardrobe this season, it's Claudia Winkleman's outfit tonight that really caught my attention. Swapping trousers for a sleek black kilt (from Le Kilt, no less), Winkleman proved the traditional Scottish menswear staple has become a fashion statement loved by well dressed women.
Unlike a traditional kilt, Claudia's black version is far more pared back, bringing subtle drama through crisp pleats, sharp lines and classic double buckle detailing. She paired the swishy staple with a baby pink shirt from Comme des Garçons, complete with an oversized Peter Pan style collar, alongside polished Derby shoes and black tights.
Of course, the beauty of anything black is that it catches your attention without relying on bold prints or bright colours. Instead, the crisp pleats and sharp lines make for an eye-catching piece that looks considered yet pairs effortlessly with a plethora of wardrobe staples, from cashmere jumpers to, as Claudia proves, a crisp cotton shirt.
Fortunately, recreating Claudia's look doesn't require a designer budget. The original Le Kilt style costs £550, but M&S has an almost identical black kilt for a fraction of the price (£48, to be exact) that's every bit as chic.
Cut with classic pleats and a flattering midi length, it captures the same gothic Highland charm that's become synonymous with the TV presenter's style. There's one key difference, though, aside from the price point. M&S has taken the silhouette one step further by adding elegant wrap front detailing for an extra touch of je ne sais quoi.
Of course, M&S isn't the only high street retailer offering a black kilt reminiscent of Claudia's original. From Nobody's Child to Boden, I've rounded up five more chic alternatives below.
