Don’t get me wrong, I love the usual autumnal palette. Right now the high street is brimming with the rich shades of burgundy, chocolate brown and dark denim, and they’re perennial favourites for good reason. But it’s also exactly why I stopped in my tracks when I spotted a fresh, surprising shade sneaking into the line up: mint green.
The shade completely stole my attention as I scrolled through Marks & Spencer’s new-in section, spotting it on a cardigan. It’s not a colour we’d usually associate with autumn - let alone knitwear - but it works surprisingly well.
Though it might feel unexpected at this time of year, the uplifting shade is backed by the AW26 collections. Just turn to Chanel, Chloé and Cecile Bahnsen, who make a convincing case for it.
M&S gives the shade a cosy twist with this cardigan. Its soft, fuzzy texture feels perfectly suited to the season ahead, while the open-knit pattern creates a delicate pointelle effect and dainty pearl buttons add a feminine, polished finish.
But my favourite detail of all? The clever addition of billowy blouson sleeves, which adds structure, lending it distinctly a modern edge. It feels like a real step up from your usual cardi.
Amid the seasons deeper palette, it’s the kind of piece that will instantly freshen up your wardrobe. And, you might find yourself surprise at how well it pairs with the typical autumnal shades we know and love already.
Take indigo jeans, for example. It’s the key denim wash to know this autumn, and, as M&S demonstrates, work endlessly well with the minty hue. Layer with a burgundy tee beneath the knit staple, and add a pair of brown loafers (or boots, if it’s raining), and you’re good to go.
