The puffer jacket has long been winter’s key wardrobe workhorse: warm, dependable and easy to throw on just as you’re about to leave the front door. This season, though, it’s getting a more considered update, thanks to one heritage print: tartan.
Yes, it may sound surprising, as the puffer jacket typically comes in muted, dark colours, and tends to shy away from prints and patterns, but it’s true. The criss cross style has now brough a touch of chic country dressing to everyday outerwear, giving the familiar padded silhouette a heritage feel.
My favourite version? Well, it comes from Primark. At just £30, it’s worth considering for your rotation, especially as I predict it will sell out. Cut in an all over navy, green and white check, it comes with a matching scarf detail built into the design, which can be removed if you’d prefer a cleaner finish.
With a high neckline, cuffed sleeves, a zip and concealed button fastening, the jacket is practical, yet the removable scarf adds a thoughtful touch.
Of course, the main appeal of this piece is the contrast: traditional tartan has its roots in Scotland’s past, while the puffer shape is a more modern design, having entered fashion conversations in the 1980s (at the earliest). Combine the two, though, and you get a distinctive staple that’s sure to earn you plenty of compliments and keep you cosy even when temperatures seriously dip.
As for styling, the jacket does much of the talking, so keep the rest of your outfit pared back. Wear it with straight leg jeans, a classic cable knit jumper and sturdy boots for an easy weekend uniform. For a more sophisticated look, layer it over tailored trousers and a plain roll neck top, preferably in chocolate brown, for a polished finish.
