Say hello to the scarf knit – the two-in-one jumper you didn’t know you needed

Layering has never been so easy

In my expert opinion, autumn is one of the easiest seasons to inject chic style into your wardrobe. How? Layering. Whether it’s shirts, jackets, knitwear or coats, the options are endless, offering an easy way to create looks that feel considered.

So, when I discovered scarf jumpers, I was immediately intrigued. A layering hybrid of a scarf and a jumper (or sometimes a cardigan), this two-in-one staple is the ultimate throw-on-and-go, fuss free piece. But the trend is hardly new.

Last year, scarf attachments surged in popularity, thanks in part to a stylish scarf coat from Nordic brand Toteme. Naturally, the high street followed suit, with retailers such as M&S and Mint Velvet offering their own takes. Soon after came the Toteme scarf jumper, which, unsurprisingly, also inspired a wave of affordable lookalikes.

This season, we here at GH believe that scarf jumpers will continue to steal the spotlight, especially with the rise of preppy, Parisian-style triangle scarves. One standout is Jigsaw’s version, which pairs a lustrous silk necktie with a wool-knit sweater for a refined contrast. River Island’s muted grey take is less luxe, but equally as stylish.

For a pop of colour, Massimo Dutti’s red cable-knit jumper is a standout. With braided detailing and a rich festive hue, it’s a piece you’ll reach for right through the winter.

Now for the cardigans. Nobody’s Child offers a black cable-knit version with a dainty matching scarf, while my personal favourite comes from Topshop - a striped red scarf cardigan that feels effortlessly French. Not only does it have the GH seal of approval, but it would no doubt earn a nod from any well-dressed Parisian woman. Très chic, non?

However, if you’re not quite ready to commit to the full layered look? Try the jewel toned detachable scarf jumper from Uniqlo, or start small with a simple neck scarf. Hush’s red wool version pairs brilliantly with charcoal and black, proof that even a single accessory can elevate your outfit.
