There are winter buys that keep you warm, and there are ones that transform how you feel when you get dressed, offering an extra layer of armour before you go outside into the big freeze. The Uniqlo: C Heattech thermal polo neck sits firmly in the latter camp. At just £19.90, it is not just a sensible purchase for now, it's a strategic and stylish one.

At Good Housekeeping, we're always interested in solutions that do both and go beyond the purely practical. This humble polo neck is exactly that; a fashion-meets-function superstar that allows you to stay warm without overcomplicating anything. And if we've learnt anything from Claudia Winkleman's Traitors wardrobe, it's that a fine-knit polo is the ultimate winter multitasker.

Because greatness of this unassuming thermal lies in its warmth and fashion versatility. You can layer it under cosy jumpers, ballet cardigans, sleeveless knits, waistcoats, shirts or tailoring. Or wear it underneath dresses to extend their life through winter, or under a blazer for a little extra weekday polish (and warmth).

Uniqlo, and its global creative director Clare Waight Keller who designed this piece, knows exactly what it's doing. The fabric features the brand's Extra Warm Heattech technology, making it around 1.5 times warmer than its standard Heattech pieces. The addition of 9 per cent cashmere also gives it a softness that feels far more luxurious than the price tag suggests.

This isn't just my editorial over-enthusiasm talking; this knit has form. It has more than 1,200 five-star reviews, with many Uniqlo customers describing it as the best thermal they've ever owned.

And it comes in a wide range of trending colours: Cloud Dancer white, burgundy, black, and a bright, winter red. These shades will work seamlessly under everything you already own. Judging by the number of other colours already sold out, it's one of those pieces worth snapping up when you see it, a recommendation I rarely make but, in this case, and with sub-zero temperatures outside, a necessary one. If you don't own one already, that is.

Add one to your wardrobe now, and you will wonder how you ever dressed for winter without it. We did.
