If you’re looking for a crowd-pleasing yule log to round off this year's Christmas feast – without spending a fortune – Co-op’s Irresistible Chocolate Yule Log is a strong choice. The Good Housekeeping Institute taste-tested a range of yule logs to find the best for Christmas 2026, and Co-op’s was crowned the joint best supermarket yule log, sharing the accolade with Sainsbury's.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Christmas Taste Test 2026

best yule log

Co-op's chocolatey cake scored 77/100 and costs £7 for 467g. That’s a whopping £20 less than the winning Brownie and the Bean Christmas Chocolate Brownie Yule Log, which costs £27 for 835g – a saving of around 74%.

Sainsbury's also scored 77/100 for its Triple Chocolate Yule Log, which costs £15 for 800g.

Granted Co-op’s classic yule log is smaller than our winner, but it's a good option for slightly smaller gatherings, and should still serve around six people depending on how generous your slices are. Our testers noted creamy milk chocolate and subtle hazelnut flavours, with one comparing it to Nutella. Soft sponge, creamy ganache and a crisp chocolate coating give it a gorgeous texture, too.

Simple and well-balanced, it’s sure to please the whole family. At £7, it’s a tempting choice for a festive dessert that costs considerably less than our winner.
