If you thought cat-and-mouse chases didn’t get better than that between Villanelle (Jodie Comer, pictured above) and Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), we’re here to throw a spanner in the works. Thanks to our friends at Disney, a beyond brilliant detective thriller has just arrived on our screens in the form of Furious and, we’ll say it, the new Killing Eve is finally here.
Who’s our new Villanelle? Catherine (Lola Petticrew), the manipulative serial killer who’s getting revenge on men – one murder at a time. As for our new Eve, that would be FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum), who finds herself forming a complicated psychological relationship with the woman she’s tasked with tracking down. Sound familiar? We told you.
With the first six episodes available to watch tonight, here’s everything you need to know about Furious before you tune in, including the full plot, cast and how to watch it.
What is Furious about?
The eight-part series is loosely inspired by the 1987 film, Black Widow, and introduces us to FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum). Alice is on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating serial killer, Catherine (Lola Petticrew), who’s targeting male victims who she believes have wronged women. We meet the latter shortly before she gives a fatal injection to one such victim.
Alice has a backstory of her own: she’s moved jobs following an abusive relationship with a colleague and yet her new workplace appears to be almost as toxic. No spoilers, but let’s just say men don’t exactly get portrayed very well in the series!
As Alice investigates the case with her colleague Danny (Scoot McNairy), she finds herself on a cat-and-mouse chase in which the line between right and wrong begins to blur rather rapidly. Both Alice and Catherine have experienced intense trauma, but the question is: is revenge ever justified, and is it ever worth it?
What to read next
The real genius of the series lies in the relationship between the two women. Catherine has a Villanelle-like quality to her; one moment, she appears to be a childlike victim herself, but the next she’s inflicting the unthinkable on others. As for Alice, her past trauma is never far from the surface, and the world she finds herself in with Catherine seems to offer a strange sense of safety.
Emmy Rossum explained to Entertainment Weekly that the two characters are less different than one might imagine. “I think it's interesting to have a crime thriller where the two female superpowers in the dual lead roles are actually more similar than they are different,” she said.
“And of course, Alice and Catherine will start to realise this over the course of the story. They're both victims of violence who are looking for justice both for themselves and also on a much larger scale in unconventional ways. And because they are constantly underestimated, they are both able to -and have to - work outside the lanes of convention.”
Who’s in the cast of Furious?
The cast of Furious includes:
- Emmy Rossum (Shameless) as Alice
- Lola Petticrew (Trespasses) as Catherine
- Scoot McNairy (Speak No Evil) as Danny
- Quincy Tyler Bernstine (Modern Love) as Nora
- Jake Lacy (All Her Fault) as Marshall
Is there a trailer for Furious?
Yes, you can watch the trailer for Furious below.
Is Furious any good?
Yes – there’s a reason it’s being compared to Killing Eve! It goes much deeper than typical cat-and-mouse thrillers, which makes it far more watchable, and examines how far trauma can really push us and the dark places it can take us to. If you’re looking for a genuinely gripping series to watch, we can confidently say you’ve found it in Furious.
How can I watch Furious?
The first six episodes of Furious are available to watch now on Disney+. The five subsequent episodes will be released weekly on Mondays.
What other detective thrillers can I watch now?
If you haven’t heard seen One of Us, we’d highly recommend it. The series is the work of The Missing creators Harry and Jack Williams and takes us to the Highlands of Scotland and Edinburgh, where a horrific double murder rocks the lives of two families living side-by-side. You can watch One of Us now on BBC iPlayer. For another series that revolves around a troubled detective, we’d suggest Irvine Welsh’s Crime, which introduces us to Detective Ray Lennox (Dougray Scott) who’s investigating the disappearance of young girl. It’s a complex case, which is made all the more challenging by Lennox’s personal struggles with addiction and childhood trauma. Irvine Welsh’s Crime is available to watch on ITVX.
