If you’ve had a Tom Hardy-shaped hole in your life since finishing the exhilarating latest series of MobLand, we’re here to fill the void. The king of gangster thrillers has plenty of other material to enjoy, and his performances are every bit as impressive as his portrayal of the Harrigans’ ruthless fixer, Harry Da Souza.
From a film that’s, dare we say, even better than MobLand, to his haunting turn as Britain’s most notorious prisoner and a charming leader of a 1960s motorcycle gang – there’s something for everyone. So, get ready for thrills, violence and action, here are seven 5-star Tom Hardy dramas to watch now on ITV, Netflix, the BBC and more.
The Bikeriders
Tom joins Jodie Comer and Austin Butler for a wild ride through Americana. The story traces the fictional Vandals Motorcycle Club in 1960s Chicago as they go from a group of rebellious outsiders to something far more violent and sinister. Kathy (Jodie) falls in love with reckless biker Benny (Austin) and is drawn into the dangerous world of the bikers, led by Johnny (Tom Hardy), who starts to lose control of his club. As the gang becomes more powerful, the trio are forced to make choices about their loyalty to the club – and each other. The Bikeriders is available to watch now on Prime Video.
Bronson
Michael Peterson would do whatever it took to make a name for himself. In 1974, the 19-year-old headed to a post office with a sawn-off shotgun to rob it. He was swiftly arrested and sentenced to seven years in jail. But that was only the beginning. Peterson went on to become one of Britain’s most notorious prisoners and renamed himself Charles Bronson after the American action hero. Tom dons his trademark bald head and curled moustache to step into the shoes of the criminal and guide us through his life – most of which was spent behind bars and in solitary confinement. It’s equal parts fascinating and terrifying. Bronson is available to watch now on ITVX and Disney+.
Warrior
If you thought you’d seen enough of Tom throwing punches, think again. The actor takes on troubled Marine Tommy Conlon, who returns home to Pittsburgh for the first time in 14 years and asks his father Paddy (Nick Nolte) to help train him for a huge MMA fight. Meanwhile, Tommy’s estranged brother Brendan (Joel Edgerton) is an ex-fighter turned teacher who returns to the ring after he and his family fall into financial ruin. The brothers end up face-to-face in the tournament, prepared to hurt each other for a life-changing sum of money. But who will win? And can they fix their broken relationship? Warrior is available to watch now on Prime Video.
Peaky Blinders
Tom takes on one of his most memorable roles as Alfie Solomons, a Jewish mob boss in this gangster family epic. Alfie becomes an uneasy ally of Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) after he asks for Tommy’s help with the war between the Jews and Italians in series 2. Despite not being part of the Shelby clan, Alfie became one of the franchise’s most iconic characters, with his erratic behaviour, bizarre voice and violent outbursts. Peaky Blinders is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
Layer Cake
Tom stars alongside Daniel Craig in this fast-paced gangster drama – and, in our opinion, it’s even better than MobLand. Daniel plays an unnamed, sleek drug dealer who prides himself on selling Class A drugs as if they were any other business commodity. Tom plays Clarkie, his highly intelligent associate who helps run his highly efficient production line. Daniel’s character decides it’s time for him to go straight. But first, he must do two final favours for his boss Jimmy Price (Kenneth Cranham) – track down a missing woman and negotiate a huge shipment. Of course, nothing goes smoothly. It’s sleek, stylish and fantastically fun. Layer Cake is available to watch now on Prime Video.
Capone
It’s a gangster film with a twist. Al Capone is arguably one of the most infamous American mobsters in history. But, rather than chart Capone’s rise over Chicago’s underworld, the story focuses on his final days in exile in Palm Island, Florida. Following a decade of imprisonment, dementia starts to take hold and he’s hit with violent flashbacks and hallucinations. Meanwhile, the FBI are watching him with eagle eyes – they’re trying to find the millions of dollars he allegedly hid away on his property. The problem? Alphonse Capone has no recollection of where the money is. Capone is available to watch now on Netflix.
The Revenant
The three-time Oscar-winning Western film follows legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) on his trek along the Missouri River in 1823. A grizzly bear attacks Glass, and his fellow expedition team, led by John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), leave him for dead. While suffering with agonising wounds, Glass drags himself through the relentless winter to seek revenge on the ruthless trapper John. But will he succeed? The Revenant is available to watch now on Netflix and Prime Video.
