How we test fridge freezers
As a fridge freezer is a big investment, our Good Housekeeping Institute experts thoroughly test every model in the lab to ensure it lives up to standards and expectations. These are the factors they’re looking at.
Temperature monitoring and freshness: We look at the stability of each model’s temperature regulation over 24 hours, examining which spots are the coolest and the warmest at set times by using LogTags to measure the temperatures. Fridges should be set between 1.7C and 3.3C while freezers should sit between -18C and –20C to stop food from spoiling so we check for any fluctations over this time period as you don’t want that steak you just spent a fortune on to be at anything less than the perfect temperature.
Temperature recovery: Have kids who stand with the door open looking into the fridge? Same. Our experts test temperature recovery by checking how quickly the fridge recovers to a food-safe temperature after leaving the door open for two minutes. We repeat this for the freezer, and conduct a joint test, opening both the fridge and freezer doors simultaneously. We look for a speedy recovery to a safe temperature so that the food inside doesn’t spoil.
Energy usage and running costs: We don’t just rely on the fridge freezer’s energy rating; we take our own measurements based on how much electricity each fridge freezer consumes over a 24-hour period. Energy prices are then calculated based on the current price cap (£0.2467/kWh) to work out the overall running cost.
Extra features: Our experts award points for useful extra features such as humidity control, holiday or eco modes, and helpful racks, holders and adjustable shelves for storing food more easily.
Ease of use and cleaning: Throughout testing, we rate each model on ease of use – considering any intuitive buttons or dials and touchscreen responsiveness – and look at how simple they are to clean, including whether the shelves are easily removable.
Finally, we rate the clarity and helpfulness of the instructions and combine it all into a score out of 100. These are our top buys.
Note: energy prices are based on the current energy price cap (£0.2611/kwh).
