Affordable and hypoallergenic: The best fibre bedding, from pillows to mattress toppers

Sleep easy with a tried and tested hypoallergenic bedding

There's nothing more restorative than a great night’s sleep in comfortable bedding. Tog count, fabric and fillings are all things you should consider when shopping, and when it comes to the latter, the most common options are down or microfibre and hollow fibre bedding.

Both offer a range of benefits, and while down is known for its luxe feel, the best fibre bedding is definitely worth considering for both its hypoallergenic benefits and affordability. And it's good news if you’re already a fibre fan, as we’ve tested a wide range of fibre bedding here at the Good Housekeeping Institute to help you decide which is the best for your budget.

The best fibre bedding

Each product was reviewed by our testers, who slept with them for a minimum of two weeks. They gave detailed feedback on how comfortable the bedding was at night, how well it supported their sleep and how well constructed it felt. We've included more details on the testing process below our product reviews.

These are our best performing hollowfibre and microfibre duvets, pillows and mattress toppers. Prices shown are for UK doubles.

Soak and Sleep Soft as Down Microfibre Duvet - 10.5 Tog

Pros

  • Quick to secure additional layer
  • Comfortable design

Cons

  • Slightly noisy

Score: 96/100

For our winning microfibre duvet, the clue to its standout quality is in the name – it’s as soft as a luxurious, down-filled duvet, minus the price tag. Something our testers vouched for, with one praising the "fluffy" filling, which they said had "a down feather feel to it”. What’s more, the fibre filling makes it an indulgent option for allergy sufferers.

We tested the 10.5 tog duvet as well as a 3-in-1 option as part of our best all seasons duvet roundup, which comes with two layers – a summer-ready 4.5 tog, and a thicker 9 tog duvet that can be joined for a cosy 13.5 togs. Whatever the weight, all our testers agreed that this duvet was well-made and soft to the touch, saying they would buy it themselves after the trial period.

With a not too warm/not too cool tog count of 6.7, this microfibre duvet kept our panel just right. “It helped me maintain a regular body temp through warmer nights,” said one happy tester.

The brand describes this duvet as having a cloud-like feel, which is designed to provide ultimate cosiness and comfort at night. This was felt (quite literally) by most testers, with the majority agreeing it was lightweight, comfy and soft to sleep under.

Snuggledown Luxury Satin Stripe Duvet 10.5 Tog

Pros

  • Stays in place on the bed
  • Fits inside duvet covers easily

Cons

  • Some may prefer a weightier duvet

Score: 87/100

We love recreating the feel of five-star hotel bedding at home. This duvet promises to deliver that same plush experience, and it didn’t disappoint. Despite the 10.5 tog rating, many testers said it felt warmer and cosier than other duvets with the same rating. Yet, it still felt impressively light to snooze under.

Testers noted the filling remained evenly distributed even after washing. Some said they would have preferred a slighter plumper filling for an added touch of luxury, but the stitching felt strong, while the satin stripes are a stylish touch. As one tester put it, “It’s a shame it's all hidden under a duvet cover, but the design gives me confidence in the quality and longevity.”

Dusk Anti-allergy Feels Like Down Duvet Collection 13.5 Tog All Seasons

Pros

  • Feels like down
  • Breathable

Cons

  • Poppers came undone for some testers

Score: 85/100

Part of Dusk’s anti-allergy range, this duvet offers the same cloud-like softness as down, without any sniffle-inducing feathers. It’s treated with Silvadur, the brand’s antimicrobial tech, which is designed to banish bacteria and odours to keep things fresh. Many of our testers who suffer from allergies told us they didn’t experience any flare-ups, so it lived up to its claims.

Our panel tested the 13.5 tog all-seasons design, which can also be split into a 4.5 or a 9-tog duvet, making it perfect for year-round use. When combined, some found it rather weighty, but most were pleased with how comfortable and cosy it kept them throughout the night. “It was a pleasure getting into bed every night and hard getting out,” said one panel member. You have been warned!

Pros

  • Filling remained evenly distributed after washing
  • Hypoallergenic and anti-dust mite properties

Cons

  • Slight initial odour that meant it needed airing before use

Score: 82/100

Filled with the brand’s Smartfil fibre – made from recycled plastic bottles – this duvet is designed to retain heat in much the same way as down. The result is a cosy, insulating feel that doesn’tcompromise on comfort. “It still had the plush, cosy feel I associate with down,” said one tester, proving it can rival natural fibres for warmth and softness.

While everyone agreed it was very comfortable, some testers said it was heavier than expected, so it may not be suitable if you like something lightweight and breathable. That said, others felt the added weight enhanced the premium, high-quality feel.

Homescapes Luxury Hotel 'Soft as Down' Super Microfibre™ All Seasons Duvet

Pros

  • High comfort ratings across all testers
  • Suitable for year-round use

Cons

  • Smaller section may take time to re-fluff after storing

Score: 79/100

This all-seasons duvet is another good choice for year-round use. Featuring 9-tog and 4.5-tog layers, when combined, it makes a luxuriously warm and cosy duvet for the colder months, while the 4.5 toglayer is great for summer. Our panel found it easy to fasten and separate, making it simple to adjust if a sudden heatwave strikes! However, it lost a few marks for its loss in plushness after washing, so it may need some refluffing before putting the covers on.

“This has converted me to microfibre duvets, as I was previously Team Down,” said one impressed tester, who struggled to find fault with it. There were some complaints about an initial odour, so it’s worth airing it out for a few hours before putting it on your bed.

This anti-allergy topper from Slumberdown will have you sleeping soundly, minus any sniffles – and it's easy on your bank balance, too.

Despite being a budget pick, testers scored it well for the quality and level of comfort it delivered. Its only downside is that it doesn’t have any straps to secure it to the mattress, but a good fitted sheet should do the job.

Snuggledown set out to bring that luxurious five-star hotel finish to your bedroom with this topper, and it scored highly for comfort thanks to its plush hollow fibre filling.

It also got near-perfect marks for its secure fit – even with lots of tossing and turning – thanks to the sturdy elastic straps. It adds a soft, bouncy layer to your mattress without costing a fortune.

Pros

  • Easy to wash thanks to the layered design
  • Soft and comfortable

Cons

  • Only secured by straps

Score: 86/100

This topper’s two layers of microfibre provide double the amount of support, earning it full marks for comfort. Testers liked its smooth finish and said they couldn't feel any of the stitching. Some did note that it was slightly smaller than their mattress (but only by a mere 1cm, which won’t make a world of difference).

When it’s time to wash, the two layers can be unzipped to separate, ensuring ultimate freshness and helping them fit inside a 9kg drum washing machine with no bother on test. And it was easy putting this topper back on the bed too – even for one tester who said it can often be tricky with their bad back.

Pros

  • Filling stays puffed up after weeks of use
  • Good quality finish

Cons

  • Straps came loose for restless sleepers

Score: 76/100

Our testers loved Snuggledown’s original luxurious hotel topper, so we had to try this extra-deep version. The cosy padding added “a nice level of softness,” according to one tester. Note, you may just need deeper sheets to accommodate the extra layers. But overall, it’s a great option for a relatively well-used mattress in need of a boost.

In fact, it can add a hotel-level of comfort to any sleep space, as one tester also used it on their sofa bed and said it made the sleeping experience far more comfortable.

Like their winning duvet counterpart, these microfibre pillows from Soak and Sleep provided a luxurious, down-like feel, at a budget-friendly price.

They scored highly for retaining their shape and bounce night after night, rather than flattening out (which no one wants). They also kept their shape during washing, with its filling distribution and stitching staying like new.

“The nicest pillow I’ve ever used,” said one tester – quite the statement!

Pros

  • Maintains shape well
  • Kept some testers’ heads cool, making them good for hot sleepers

Cons

  • Not firm enough for some

Score: 87/100

These climate control pillows from Slumberdown are filled with a Dacron filling, a specially developed synthetic polyester fibre that’s designed to keep you cool by driving excess moisture away from your body and regulating your temperature all night long. When put to the test, one panel member praised the pillow's ability to keep them cool, which they said was a “real bonus” in the summer months.

If you prefer a firmer pillow, you’d be better opting for one of our best memory foam pillows, as one of our testers likened these ones to “a big marshmallow” due to their softness. We don’t think that’s a bad thing, though.

Cons

This hybrid pillow is a versatile solution for all types of sleepers, as it’s soft on one side and firm on the other. One layer is made from a firm memory foam while the other uses an ultra-soft hollowfibre filling, providing the perfect Goldilocks balance.

Some testers did find it slightly too firm, though, but thankfully the dual-sided design also has a removable Visco memory foam layer for you to customise its height and plumpness. All the layers are held together with a washable cover, too, so cleaning is easy.

Comfortable and cooling, testers also praised this design’s temperature-regulating properties.

Pros

  • Holds its shape and stays in place overnight
  • Machine washable with clear care instructions

Cons

Score: 85/100

Just a glance at this dual-sided pillow and you can see why it’s a great cooling option. One side features a honeycomb gel structure designed to regulate temperature, with one tester saying it felt “noticeably cooler to touch,” making it a great option for hot sleepers. Flip it over and you’ll find a bamboo nano weave surface, which is soft, breathable and hypoallergenic.

In terms of support, our panel of combination sleepers – aka those who switch between their side and back at night – said it was comfy throughout the testing period. Side sleepers particularly appreciated the pillow's height and structure, which helped keep the neck aligned and the shoulders supported. In fact, many said they would continue using this one after the trial period.

This sturdy yet comfortable pillow is ideal for those who prefer a firmer finish. It also worked wonders for side sleepers in our tests, with panellists saying it supported the neck and helped minimise any shoulder discomfort.

This one lost some marks because it didn’t fit very well in our pillowcase – it came up a little large – so be sure to check the sizing first. However, everyone agreed they enjoyed a good night’s sleep with this and would continue to use it after the trial.
