best car vacuums

Whether your car is your pristine pride and joy, or it tends to be a bit of a dumping ground with sweet wrappers and muddy footprints strewn across the backseat, you're going to need a good vacuum to keep things in check.

After testing the best vacuum cleaners in the Good Housekeeping Institute lab for years, we’ve found that the right model for your home doesn't always make a good choice for your car. So, we’ve put together our roundup of the best car vacuum cleaners to get the job done quickly and effectively.

These are our top scoring handheld vacuums for cleaning cars at a glance, as well as our favourite cordless vacuums that can be turned into a handheld model, but we recommend you keep scrolling to read our full reviews and what to consider before you buy.

How we test car vacuum cleaners

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test the latest vacuum cleaners as soon as (and sometimes before) they hit the shelves, which means we get to assess all the latest tech and always know the best models on the market – and that extends to the top vacuums for cleaning cars too.

When we’re testing handheld models and cordless vacuums with handheld tool attachments, we run an interior car cleaning test to see how well they tackle removing dust and hair from crevices and awkward spaces.

We also test every vacuum across three different floor types: laminate, floorboards and carpet, assessing how well they pick up set amounts of dust, dirt and ground-in fur, measuring precisely how much the vacuum collects.

For this round-up, we picked out the models that scored at least a 7.5 out of 10 in the car cleaning tests. We then looked at their overall score across all our vacuum tests, to find our top-performing handheld and cordless models for keeping your car spotless.

Pros

  • Dust bag was easy to remove
  • Controls are durable and sturdy
  • Comes with plenty of tools and reaches into tight spaces

Cons

  • Not the lightest
  • Battery lasts only nine minutes on full power with the brush roller on

Car cleaning score: 10/10
Overall score: 95/100

This is one of our best stick vacuums, and it also put in a stellar performance in handheld mode. In fact, it scored full marks on all our cleaning tests, devouring crumbs on both short and long pile carpet as well as on hard flooring.

It lifted hair in just one sweep too, making it ideal for any pet owners, and the battery lasted long enough to clean the whole car interior. Just don’t switch it to full power with the brush roller turned on too, as this drained the battery fast – only lasting nine minutes.

Overall, this is an easy-to-use, bagged stick vacuum that would make an excellent car vacuum as well as an all-round household cleaner.

Pros

  • Canister is easy to remove, empty and refit
  • Barely dropped a mark in handheld mode
  • Excellent battery life

Cons

  • Performance as a stick vacuum wasn’t as strong; it struggled to collect dust on long pile carpet
  • You can’t store any tools onboard

Car cleaning score: 10/10
Overall score: 89/100

This lightweight, intuitive cordless vacuum also barely dropped a mark in the lab. When used as a handheld, it aced our crumb pick-up tests, sometimes removing more than we’d laid down by reaching deep down into the carpet pile with its powerful suction. It needed two sweeps to clear away pet hair, but it really shone when we put it to work in the car.

The battery lasted a full 25 minutes on full power and it gobbled up both large and finer debris when we whipped it round the interiors. The crevice tool worked a treat too, fitting easily down the sides of seats.

Pros

  • Easily picks up pet hair in a single sweep
  • The dust canister was easy to remove and refit

Cons

  • You have to hold down the button throughout use
  • Only has one power mode

Car cleaning score: 9.4/10
Overall score: 94/100

You’re in luck with this handheld vacuum; not only was it a top performer in both our car and indoor tests, but it’s also the most affordable model we tried. Testers found it super easy to manoeuvre in between seats and around seat belts with the 2-in-1 crevice tool, so they were able to lift most of the crumbs, dust and dirt laid. It was even effective at removing notoriously tricky pet hair.

And if that’s not enough, this vacuum comes with a squeegee accessory that can be used to suck up small spillages, so you’re sorted for both wet and dry messes.

Pros

  • You can mount the charging base on the wall
  • Ergonomic handle and sleek design

Cons

  • Max power mode drained the battery fast
  • Dust canister is quite stiff and tricky to empty

Car cleaning score: 9.4/10
Overall score: 92/100

Testers found this Shark vacuum comfortable to hold and easy to use throughout testing. It took just 13 minutes to pick up most of the dust and dirt we laid, and the upholstery tool removed pet hair swiftly too.

It struggled slightly on short and long pile carpet though, and its relatively small dust canister meant it needed emptying more often during longer tasks. But for quick car cleans, it’s a stellar buy.

Pros

  • Easy to empty thanks to the bagged design
  • Good battery life
  • Excellent suction

Cons

  • Struggled to lift ingrained dust and finer particles at times
  • Only has two power modes

Car cleaning score: 8.9/10
Overall score: 90/100

Another bagged cordless design, but this one also has Henry’s signature smiley face. The nimble vacuum has impressive suction power, lifting large particles and hair from the footwell, seats and mats in the car. The combi tool really wowed here, while the crevice attachment proved a reliable extra for reaching into awkward spaces.

We did notice it left behind some finer particles that were ingrained in the carpet fibres, but it still managed to remove up to 98% of the debris we laid down. The battery lasted well too, with just under half the power left once we’d finished.

Pros

  • Coped well with hair in the footwell
  • Boost mode was helpful in giving that extra bit of suction power

Cons

  • Crevice tool was slightly too short
  • Main body is bulky

Car cleaning score: 8.3/10
Overall score: 93/100

This vacuum aced our handheld cleaning tests, collecting most debris in one swift sweep. It even lifted pet hair without a fuss.

In the car, the battery lasted long enough to clean the entire interiors and the suction lifted all the larger particles. Some ingrained dust was left behind in the carpet and the crevice tool was slightly too short in some areas – but even so, it removed most of the debris we laid down

Overall, it's easy to use and a good value buy.

Pros

  • Excellent pick-up on dust and crumbs
  • Bagged design for more hygienic emptying
  • Fairly quiet in use

Cons

  • Bulkier and heavier than others
  • The crevice tool isn’t long enough for some tasks

Car cleaning score: 7.8/10
Overall score: 94/100

With a large, bagged design, this handheld proved itself a great go-to for clearing up crumbs in the lab. The dusting brush attachment was particularly effective, collecting almost all the Rice Krispies we laid down in a single sweep.

When it came to car cleaning, we found the crevice tool wasn’t long enough to get right to the bottom of gaps between the seats. The body of the vacuum is also a little bulky, making it awkward to manoeuvre at times. That said, it still sucked up over 80% of the dirt in the car and the battery lasted throughout.

Pros

  • Excellent all-rounder
  • Has a self-clean function for flushing grime out the nozzle
  • Compact

Cons

  • Corded (although the cord is 6m long)
  • On the expensive side

Overall score: 93/100

Note that the Shark EveryMess was scored as a spot cleaner in the lab, which is why it doesn’t have a separate car cleaning score, although we did test its car cleaning abilities. We just had to highlight this excellent 3-in-1 gadget, which acts as a stain remover as well as a wet and dry vacuum. It’s ideal for clearing up spills from car journeys as well as handling general dirt and debris.

It gobbled up crumbs on carpet and hard floors when used as a standard handheld vacuum and the nozzle fitted easily into narrow crevices – perfect for cleaning between car seats.

Note, it isn’t cordless so you may need an extension lead for it to reach the car, but this is a worthwhile investment thanks to its powerful stain-removing abilities and great suction. You can read more about this versatile cleaner in our Shark EveryMess review.

How to choose a car vacuum cleaner

There are a few key things to consider before buying a vacuum cleaner for your car. We’ve outlined these below.

Type: Cordless and handheld vacuum cleaners are the best types of vacuums for cleaning the interiors of your car. With cordless vacuums, you’re not restricted by a wire, and they can be used as a handheld too. When in this mode, they’re compact, lightweight, and easy to manoeuvre in and out of tight spaces. Opt for a separate handheld if you already have a good stick vacuum at home and want a handheld model you can easily take out – or keep – in the car. Go for a cordless model if you need to replace your old vacuum, so you can tackle the car and home in one appliance.

Weight: Your vacuum should be lightweight and well-balanced. One that’s too heavy or tricky to hold will get uncomfortable if you’re cleaning the car for an extended time.

Tools: You’ll need a crevice tool to get between the seats in your car, so check your vacuum has one before buying. Other helpful additions include motorised brushes and combi tools for lifting hair and debris.

Battery life: All cordless models are restricted by their battery life, so it’s important to find one that will last long enough for you to clean the whole car. Look for vacuums that last up to 20 minutes on high power as that should give you plenty of suction and to give your car a deep clean.

The verdict: What is the best car vacuum cleaner to buy?

For cleaning between the seats or sprucing up floor mats, you want one of the best handheld vacuums or best cordless vacuums, so you don't have to worry about having a plug socket nearby or a long extension lead.

If you’re looking for a car-specific vacuum cleaner, then Black+Decker’s Wet and Dry Cordless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner is a no-brainer. It impressed on all floor types and its great range of tools helped reach everywhere in the car. Plus, it’s under £45.

However, if you want a vacuum that can clean your home as well as your car, the Halo Capsule XR is an all-round top performer. If you don’t want a bagged model, though, choose the Levoit LVAC300 Cordless Vacuum.
