best milk frother

We love a latte or a frothy cappuccino, but that daily caffeine hit at your local coffee shop can soon add up, so we’re all about achieving that same barista-level finish at home. And with the best milk frother, you’ll be able to make creamy lattes and cappuccinos in the comfort of your own kitchen, whenever you want.

Most models can produce hot and cold froth, and some can even deliver rich, indulgent hot chocolates, too. So, to find the best for every budget, our experts have been whipping up a storm in the lab.

The best milk frothers to buy in 2026

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test milk frothers by trialling every setting and function on offer, from creating hot and cold froth to simply heating milk or making delicious hot chocolates and creamy milkshakes. We judge the taste and texture of each drink, as well as assessing the quality of the foam.

You’ll find a more detailed breakdown of how we test milk frothers, plus what to consider before buying, below our reviews. But, first, time for a cuppa.

Melitta Cremio Milk Frother

Pros

  • Made a delicious hot chocolate with no spilling or overflowing during the programme
  • Coped well with frothing plant-based milk

Cons

  • Need to hold down the frothing button for three seconds to access the cold programme
  • Although it has an angled lip, there was slight dribbling down the side when pouring

Score: 95/100

Consistent and versatile, our winning milk frother was a strong all-rounder in testing. It earned a perfect score when frothing cow’s milk, delivering velvety, thick foam that was stable for over five minutes. Plant-based milk was beautifully creamy and thick, too, and just slightly less uniform than dairy.

Cold froth was another strength – while there was a slight variation in the size of the bubbles, it still produced one of the best cold froths out of all the models in this list.

Each programme was easy to operate, with just two buttons needed – one for heating and one for frothing – and it worked quietly, too. The light-coloured interior is a nice touch, making it easier to see the min and max fill lines, which is a detail many models overlook.

Pros

  • Large capacity
  • Effective non-stick interior, making it easy to rinse and wipe clean
  • Excellent for making hot chocolate

Cons

  • Bulkier than others, taking up more space in the cupboard
  • Attachments are only dishwasher-safe up to 40°C, so it may be safer to hand wash

Score: 94/100

With a capacity of more than half a litre, this Dualit model is great for making multiple drinks in one go. Thanks to the intuitive dial, it's also easy to use and would be a great pick for beginners.

In testing, it proved effective at creating frothed milk and light, silky latte foam from both dairy and plant-based milk. It especially shone in our hot chocolate tests, scoring full marks for delivering a smooth, creamy drink in under two minutes. In the summer, it can also make cold chocolate drinks, or (our personal favourite) you can just break up squares of chocolate and add it to the frother to make your drink.

It's bulkier than the other models in this roundup, but if you have the cupboard space, it's an excellent pick for batch-making hot drinks for the whole family.

Pros

  • Easy to change settings thanks to labelled controls
  • Non-stick coating makes it easy to rinse out and clean
  • Detailed instructions with diagrams

Cons

  • Milk and foam separated ever so slightly
  • Some milk scorched at the base of the jug on our plant-based tests

Score: 93/100

This great value milk frother impressed us in the lab by delivering beautifully frothed cow's milk with small, dense bubbles and excellent stability that lasted over five minutes. Plant-based milk frothed well, too, though was slightly less velvety and stable than dairy.

Cold foam was also a major win – it scored a flawless 10/10 – while it made delicious hot chocolates with both normal and plant-based milk. It even transformed simple hot chocolate powder and water into a rich, bubbly treat.

We love how easy it is to use, and the helpful beeps let you know when it's finished. Better still, it does it all without making too much noise, blending into the general background noise of our testing lab.

Pros

  • Attachments and jug are dishwasher safe
  • Touch controls are straightforward and responsive
  • Feels durable and well-made with a cool-touch body during use

Cons

  • Small capacity might not be good for families
  • No minimum markings, and the max ones are difficult to see

Score: 93/100

With a small capacity and one-minute frothing times, this is a great model for making a quick coffee for one. Dairy milk had a velvety texture, remained stable for over five minutes, and combined well with our coffee, ticking all the boxes for a fantastic cappuccino. Plant-based milk drinkers will be pleased to hear that it frothed this well, although there were some slightly larger bubbles in the mix.

Its latte foam was also excellent, although it broke down a little during the five-minute window, plus we found it difficult to tell the difference between the light and thick foam settings from the symbols on the frother. Those are minor niggles though – this is a sleek, speedy frother for those who just want one delicious cup at a time.

Smeg Mini Milk Frother MFF02

Pros

  • One-button operation
  • Body was cool to the touch throughout

Cons

  • Limited capacity
  • Heated plant-based milk to a higher temperature than desired (though this didn’t affect the taste)

Score: 92/100

Smeg is known for its stylish, retro-looking appliances and this mini milk frother is no exception. Available in pastel green, blue, red, white, black and cream, there’s something to suit every kitchen. It’s also compact, making it easy to squeeze into a cupboard or small enough to have out on your countertop.

In testing, it impressed us with how well it frothed plant-based milk, delivering a creamy, velvety texture that combined well with our coffee. Dairy milk was just as good, too.

Cold foam was another standout, where this model earned full marks for its perfect texture after just a minute of frothing. Just note that its rounded lip meant that milk dribbled down the side when we poured.

Dreo BaristaMaker Milk Frother

Pros

  • Lots of settings for different drinks and foam styles
  • Excellent frothing results with dairy and plant-based milk

Cons

  • Instructions could give clearer guidance on which settings to use

Score: 90/100

If you love experimenting with your hot drinks (and maybe even harbour ambitions about latte swans), this milk frother gives you plenty of versatility. You can choose between three foam textures, two speeds and six heat levels (including cold), or use mix mode for lump-free matcha or protein powder. “I love how all the settings allow me to customise my drink exactly how I like it,” our tester said.

It excelled at making creamy, velvety microfoam with cow’s milk, which stayed stable for five minutes – perfect for latte art. The results with plant milk were similarly impressive, although the bubbles were slightly larger in this test. Its cold foam was less stable, dissipating in two minutes, but it had a lovely creamy texture.

Although the controls are clear and intuitive, the array of functions can feel a little daunting for beginners and the instructions would benefit from clearer guidance on which settings to use for different drinks. But if you love the idea of making a different beverage every day, it’s worth the learning curve.

Aerolatte To Go Handheld Milk Frother

Pros

  • Supplied with a carry case to keep it protected
  • Works with any jug or mug, offering flexibility

Cons

  • Only has one speed setting
  • Need to use a tall jug for frothing to avoid splashes

Score: 89/100

If you’re short on storage space, a handheld milk frother could be a good choice. This battery-powered device is lightweight and easy to use, with one switch on the side to turn the whisk on. Unlike others on this list, it can’t heat milk, so you’ll need to do that separately before getting to work.

It seriously impressed when frothing both cow’s and plant-based milk, delivering creamy and stable foam that combined smoothly with coffee. It also achieved a delicious hot chocolate in just over a minute, although the milk wasn’t as velvety smooth as it was when we frothed it on its own. It didn’t froth cold foam well, producing larger bubbles, which dissipated quickly. But overall, this budget pick is a smart choice for quick, simple frothing.

Salter Aspen Milk Frother

Aspen Milk Frother

Salter Aspen Milk Frother

Pros

  • Has a curved lip for easy, mess-free pouring
  • Made a good hot chocolate, despite some residue being left behind

Cons

  • The swivel base is quite stiff, and it wobbled a little when placing and removing the jug
  • The controls aren’t well-placed for left-handed users

Score: 86/100

This Salter milk frother is a great option for everyday users who want fuss-free froth at an affordable price. The silver finish gives it a sleek, modern look and the design has been well thought out to deliver a straightforward user experience, from one-touch operation to the light-coloured interior, which makes it easy to see the minimum and max markings.

It performed best when frothing cow’s milk, creating a good consistency once we’d tapped some of the larger bubbles out. Its plant-based milk froth had impressive stability too and combined well with the coffee. Both the light foam and cold foam settings were less effective though, with some separation between the foam and the milk. Our hot chocolate took over two minutes to make as well, but it was deliciously creamy.

Pros

  • Non-stick interior is easy to clean – just rinse!
  • Enough frothing capacity for two drinks

Cons

  • Power button requires a firm press to turn it on and off
  • No cold foam

Score: 86/100

Cappuccino lovers can rely on this straightforward milk frother for thick, velvety hot foam every time. The controls couldn’t be simpler thanks to the one-button operation – and to switch from foam to straightforward heated milk, all you need to do is remove the whisk attachment.

Our plant-based milk frothed in under a minute, with a creamy consistency that combined smoothly with coffee. Regular cow’s milk had good texture and stability, too. Just note that this milk frother always heats the milk, so you can't make cold foam – and our milk often dribbled down the side when pouring. Overall, though, it's a competent, simple pick.

Milk Easy Plus Frother

Lavazza Milk Easy Plus Frother

Pros

  • Produced excellent, stable foam from both cow’s and plant-based milk
  • Quiet, compact design

Cons

  • No spout or pouring lip, so milk drips down the side
  • Cold foam loses structure quickly

86/100

With just four clearly-labelled options to choose from, this compact milk frother is a great choice for making single servings with little fuss. “I loved how simple and consistent this milk frother was,” our tester said. "I'd recommend it for beginners – the magnetic whisk and minimal steps make it really easy to use."

The foamed milk setting created consistently velvety foam from both cow’s and plant-based milk. But it was the cappuccino setting that stood out, creating a thick, glossy semi-foam that remained beautifully stable. The cold foam dissipated more quickly but had a great texture while it lasted.

It’s also quiet and easy to clean, but the milk reached around 70°C in testing (above our preferred range), so take care when it's initially frothed. The lack of lip also meant milk dripped down the side every time we poured. But overall, this milk frother is a straightforward, dependable pick.

Pros

  • Obvious beep when it finishes frothing
  • Cool-to-the-touch throughout

Cons

  • Dark interior makes it tricky to see the minimum and max markings
  • Slight dribble when pouring

Score: 84/100

This compact milk frother produced a thick, stable foam from cow's milk, with only a small amount of separation from the milk – nothing a quick stir didn't sort. It was less strong with plant-based milk, where the froth had slightly larger bubbles which weren't as stable as dairy. It excelled at straightforward hot milk, with no scorching and zero residue in the bottom of the jug.

Our cold foam had some larger bubbles, which made it less stable than we’d have liked, but it still lasted for three minutes and combined well with the rest of the drink. Overall, this is a sleek-looking milk frother with a considered design, easy one-button controls and detailed instructions.

Pros

  • Curved lip makes it easy to pour
  • Instructions include diagrams for milk-to-coffee ratios for different types of drinks

Cons

  • Wasn’t overly clear what symbols represented each preset
  • Attachments didn’t always feel secure

Score: 81/100

A versatile choice, this milk frother has four preset functions – warm milk, thick froth, light froth, and cold froth – making it very straightforward to use. When frothing cow’s milk, it produced mainly small, thick bubbles, which created a creamy texture that combined beautifully with our coffee. Plant-based foam was also good, though we noticed a film of cooked milk formed at the bottom of the jug.

We did notice some spitting during frothing, despite keeping the milk level at the maximum mark. The same issue cropped up when making hot chocolate, with some milk dripping down the sides.

This is one of the few models in our list to also make cold chocolate drinks and milkshakes – and it was impressive on test. All the powder was well combined, and it had a smooth, creamy finish. Again, a small amount of spitting occurred, so we recommend filling to just below the maximum capacity for the best results.

Lakeland Milk and Hot Chocolate Frother

Pros

  • Handle remains cool to the touch
  • Compact size makes it easy to store

Cons

  • Cold foam dissipated quickly due to bigger bubbles
  • We sometimes had to press the controls twice before it responded

Score: 77/100

This bigger capacity milk frother is a good value option for large families. The controls are intuitive, and we appreciated the audible beep that tells you when the programme is finished.

Frothing cow’s milk produced thick, velvety foam with good stability, though plant-based milk was thinner and less stable with some scorching, too – best to stick to dairy with this model. Hot chocolates made with both regular and plant-based milk impressed us, with all the chocolate dissolving and combining nicely.

As there’s no spout, it was tricky to pour the drinks without making a mess and we often found the temperature ran higher than ideal. The milk frother was noisy in use, too – we were able to hear it over the radio. Despite these niggles, the lid prevents any spitting or splashing when frothing, and the magnetic whisk is easy to remove and can be popped in the dishwasher for a quick clean.

How we test milk frothers

At the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test milk frothers with both cow’s milk and plant-based milk, filling them to their maximum capacity. We froth each batch of milk and assess the quality of the foam, whether it’s frothed all the way through, and if there’s any residue at the bottom. We also assess the overall flavour and texture with our all-important taste test.

We then see how well each model heats milk, checking if any foam is produced (a little is okay, but nothing more, as it’s only meant to heat after all). During heating, we look for any overflow or spilling and take a temperature reading to check for scorch risk. A temperature above 60C would put the milk at risk of burning and leaving residue at the bottom of the jug.

For those that can make hot chocolate, we also test out this function and assess the result, looking for smooth, creamy cocoa with an indulgent, rich flavour.

If it can make cold foam or half foam (latte/part foam), we test this too, again checking the quality of the foam, the texture of the drink, and whether there’s any scorching or residue at the bottom of the jug. We also judge whether the foam is stable and note if it dissipates too quickly.

Some milk frothers can also make milkshakes, so if they have this feature, we see how well they combine the instant powder with the milk. Again, we taste the result, judging the texture of the drink and checking whether any powder is left in the bottom.

As with all our product tests, our experts judge the design, ease of use, and instructions of each milk frother throughout. We then gather all the feedback and award a final score.

Why trust the Good Housekeeping Institute

We’ve been testing kitchen appliances at the Good Housekeeping Institute for over 100 years, and we’ve learnt a lot over that time, constantly honing and updating our testing protocols.

Our homes testing manager, Blossom Boothroyd, was responsible for ensuring our milk frother reviews replicate how you would use the product at home, while also testing it against its claims. Only the products that pass our stringent tests are awarded the GHI Approved logo.

Once we’ve compiled and analysed all the data and feedback from testing, the information is passed to our senior homes and lifestyle writer, Megan Geall, who has written hundreds of product reviews, so knows exactly what to look for in the best buys.

She also looks after our guides to the best hot chocolate makers and the best coffee machines so is a bit of an expert on making barista-level hot drinks at home.

best milk frothers

Which milk frother is best for different drinks?

  • Best milk frother for cappuccinos: The Krups Milk Frother XL1008 produced thick foam with tiny bubbles using both dairy and plant-based milk. The velvety texture combined smoothly with coffee and is perfect for cappuccinos.
  • Best milk frother for lattes and flat whites: We loved the medium settings on the Dualit Milk Frother Max for lattes and flat whites, which whipped up light, well-controlled foam with no separation.
  • Best milk frother for hot chocolate: The Dualit Milk Frother Max also excelled at making smooth, lump-free hot chocolate using both dairy and plant-based milk.
  • Best milk frother for plant-based milk: The Smeg Mini Milk Frother is our favourite automatic model for plant-based milk. It produced creamy, velvety foam with small, thick bubbles, performing almost identically whether we used plant-based or dairy milk. The Aerolatte also performed exceptionally well with plant-based milk – just bear in mind you’ll have to preheat your milk as it’s a handheld device.
  • Best milk frother for cold foam: The Progress EK5133P Chocoluxe 4-in-1 Hot Chocolate Maker created thick, velvety cold foam that managed to remain stable for over five minutes without dissipating. The Smeg Mini Milk Frother also excelled at cold foam creation.

What should I look for when buying a milk frother?

While you can use a blender or whisk to froth milk, they won’t produce the silky-smooth finish that a milk frother can deliver. When shopping for the best frother for your home, these are the factors to consider.

Type: Most of the models in this list are electric countertop milk frothers that contain a heating element and whisk inside so they can simultaneously heat and froth the milk to create a smooth foam. Alternatively, you can opt for a handheld frother. These battery-operated or rechargeable whisks work by incorporating air into the milk and should be placed directly into your cup or jug to froth. Typically, electric milk frothers make better quality froth and are more consistent than handheld models.

Functions: Hot milk for coffees, hot froth for cappuccinos, light froth for a latte and cold froth for iced coffees: there are lots of settings to consider when shopping for your ideal milk frother. Some models also feature a hot chocolate setting.

Capacity: Milk frothers have two maximum capacities: one for froth capacity and one for regular heated milk, as the milk expands when the whisk incorporates air into it. For one cappuccino, it’s best to froth around 120-150ml of milk, so if you’re making drinks for multiple coffee drinks, you might want to opt for the Dualit Milk Frother Max, which has a 540ml capacity.

How do milk frothers work?

Milk frothers incorporate air into the milk, creating small bubbles for that all-important silky creaminess. These handy gadgets work with cow’s milk as well as plant-based alternatives, although cow’s milk often froths better than others (mostly due to protein and fat content).

best milk frothers

The verdict: What is the best milk frother to buy in 2026?

Melitta’s Cremio Milk Frother is our top pick for everyday milk frothing thanks to its consistent results in testing. Those living in coffee-loving households might want to consider our runner-up, the Dualit Milk Frother Max because of its large capacity.

We also recommend the Aerolatte Handheld Milk Frother as an alternative to the electric countertop frothers on this list. It’s compact, easy to use, and wallet friendly.
