best kamado grills

You may not be familiar with a kamado BBQ, but these egg-shaped grills are worth the hype. Solid, dependable and efficient, the best kamado grills deliver perfectly cooked, flavoursome food every time, taking the stress out of alfresco dining.

Kamado BBQs, also known as ceramic BBQs, are designed to retain heat and grill food evenly using charcoal as fuel. They can also smoke, roast and bake, making them incredibly versatile, whether you want to slow cook pork, flash grill a steak or gently char vegetables for a light summer salad. The Big Green Egg is, of course, the original kamado grill – read our dedicated Big Green Egg review for more details on how it performed (spoiler: very well) – but there are now plenty more models on the market.

These ceramic grills can be an investment, though, so we’ve been busy putting a range of the best kamado grills to the test at the Good Housekeeping Institute (even in freezing spring conditions). You’ll find our favourites below but keep reading for our full reviews and everything you need to know about these game-changing charcoal stoves.

How we test kamado grills

Reviewing kamado BBQs may mean battling changeable weather but it’s also a tasty job. To judge each model's performance, we carry out up to 11 different tests depending on the size and features of the grill.

These are the features we consider.

Lid temperature: We place temperature probes on the outside of the grill, at the top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right, in the centre and on the handle. We record the temperature at each point and note the hottest reading across the grill. A good kamado BBQ should retain heat well while the handle remains at a safe temperature to touch.

Even grilling: We put slices of bread across the surface of the grill and judge how well each one browns. We look for any patchiness or areas where the bread has caught and burned to help us identify any hot or cold spots.

Cooking performance: Then we get grilling. We cook meaty sausages and burgers as well as plant-based alternatives, before charring vegetable kebabs and corn on the cob. Next up, we cook a sirloin steak and chicken breasts as this helps us judge the searing ability and moisture retention. Finally, if the grill is big enough, we cook a whole roast chicken and smoke a pork shoulder. We also try out the rotisserie attachment if included.

Ease of use, design, and instructions: We time how long the kamado BBQ takes to set up and note how easy the instructions are to follow, looking for clear diagrams and maintenance advice. We award extra points for well-designed features, checking to see if the controls are simple to use.

All the feedback and data are then combined to give each model a final score out of 100.

Charles Bentley Ottimo Searsmith 18" Ceramic Kamado Charcoal BBQ Grill

Pros

  • Controls are well-labelled and easy to understand
  • Side wings are a good size and come with tool hooks
  • Ash tray collects most of the ash
  • Clear temperature gauge

Cons

  • Grill bars may be slightly too wide for thin sausages
  • Our chicken could have been more evenly browned

Score: 96/100

Built and ready to use in under hour, this ceramic kamado BBQ impressed us from the off. It boasts everything you could need, from dual air vents to control the air flow to the adjustable grill height and additional pizza stones for indirect cooking. Plus, it all comes inside a durable, stylish, glossy green design.

It barely dropped any marks on our grill tests, delivering evenly browned sausages and burgers, moist chicken, steaks with well-rendered fat, and well-cooked corn-on-the cobs with a good amount of charring.

The handles remained cool throughout use and the instructions gave plenty of advice on how to use the two air vents to get the right level of control over the grill. Our only real bugbear was you need a bit of elbow grease to clean it, but that’s often the case with BBQs. Overall, it was very difficult to fault and is a fantastic, versatile family kamado BBQ.

Kamado Joe Classic Joe™

Pros

  • Kamado Joe comes on four castor wheels to help you move it around
  • Heat deflector and two-tier cooking helps with temperature control
  • Stable, durable build with a handle that stayed cool during use
  • Lid fits and seals tightly

Cons

  • The controls for the vent aren’t labelled, but there’s plenty of advice in the instructions
  • Doesn’t come with a cover for storing outside
  • Very heavy, so needs two people to move it (even though it’s on wheels)

Score: 94/100

It wasn’t just the post-box red design that impressed us with this grill; it was also the excellent performance and reliable cooking results.

Like the ceramic grill above, this one has a two-tier cooking system that allows you to raise one half of the grill (so that it’s further from the charcoal and the food is cooked at a different temperature). You can also use the included ‘heat deflector’ to redirect the heat round the food, so it doesn’t just come from underneath. This offers more flexibility in what – and how – you cook.

The ceramic BBQ barely dropped a mark in our grilling tests, producing flavoursome burgers and perfectly grilled steaks. Our meat-free burgers and chicken could have been more evenly browned, but both were still juicy inside. Cleaning up the grill was a little fiddly at times, but the ash-collecting tray kept things mess-free. Note, this is another heavy model (at 91kg) but it does have wheels, and it shouldn’t be an issue if it’s got a permanent spot in your garden.

Boss Grill The Egg 18"

Pros

  • Handle remained cool throughout
  • Plenty of information on the air vents as well as cooking tips and timings in the manual
  • Comes with its own trolley and wheels
  • Good value

Cons

  • Ash was tricky to remove from the bottom of the egg
  • Need oven gloves to adjust the top vent when cooking
  • Assembly took over an hour

Score: 88/100

This family-sized grill was easy to use and effective for cooking a range of foods. Our steak was “pretty much perfect” according to our tester, and chicken was evenly browned with plenty of moisture. Sausages had a patchy colouring, but they still tasted delicious.

We loved having space to prep meats and marinades on the foldable shelves at the side and the pizza stone can be used as a heat deflector for increased versatility. Plus, it also comes with a protective cover for storage.

On the downside, assembly took about an hour and needed two people due to the weight, but that’s a compromise we’re willing to make for a more affordable buy.

Best mini kamado grill

Kamado Joe Jr

Pros

  • Comes with plenty of tools for cleaning and cooking
  • Only took 20 minutes to build
  • Instructions take you to YouTube videos, which help you get the most from the grill
  • Size makes it suited to smoking

Cons

  • Described as portable but it’s still very heavy
  • No lip on the edge of the grill so sausages can easily roll off
  • Struggled to get to the hottest temperatures

Score: 86/100

With just a 13.5-inch cooking surface, this mini kamado grill is the best pick for couples or small groups. It weighs 31kg so it’s still relatively heavy, but it comes with a cast-iron stand that keeps it stable for use on the ground or a tabletop.

A heat deflector and adjustable grill height ensure better control over the temperature and the lid seals tightly – ideal for smoking meats. In testing, it produced perfectly cooked chicken with a smoky flavour and clear char lines as well as well-charred vegetables and juicy burgers. We often found food took longer to cook than in other kamado BBQs, but the extra wait is well worth it.

While it claims to be self-cleaning, we did find it struggled to get to the recommended temperature to burn off the excess food, but all in all, this is an excellent mini grill.

Fire Mountain 15 Inch Mini Ceramic Kamado BBQ Grill

Pros

  • Lid handle remained cool throughout
  • Grill bars are close enough so sausages don’t fall through
  • Cooking times and guidelines included in the instructions
  • Temperature gauge is clear and easy to read

Cons

  • No ash collection method – have to scoop out or empty through the vent
  • Recommended you store it inside, despite coming with a cover
  • Grill isn’t adjustable

Score: 80/100

Affordable, yet still a good size, this kamado grill is a good entry-level buy for a family of four. It performed best when cooking up burgers and chicken breasts, creating nice grill marks on the surface of the meat while maintaining plenty of juiciness on the inside. At times, our food browned unevenly, suggesting some fluctuations in temperature, but the overall results were still succulent and flavoursome.

The air vents were easy to adjust but you can’t change the height of the grill, and there’s no heat deflector for indirect cooking, making it slightly less versatile than some of the more premium models. That said, the felt heat seal keeps the lid tight, so it’s ideal for using as a smoker.

Pros

  • Very stable in use and compact enough to be stored in a shed
  • Lid fits snuggly and is spring loaded for ease of use
  • Adjustable grill and heat deflector ensures greater versatility
  • Affordable

Cons

  • No external handles so can’t be moved when hot
  • No recipes included
  • Trickier than others to clean

Score: 77/100

As one of the most compact grills we’ve tested (and one of the lightest), this is the best kamado grill for camping. It’s kitted out with everything you need for grilling, smoking and roasting thanks to the adjustable grill, height deflector, and easy-to-read, built-in thermometer.

Using the higher grill option helped regulate the cooking temperature, allowing us to achieve a good flavour without our food overcooking and losing moisture. The heat distribution across the grill was even throughout, helping us achieve even browning across most of our cooking tests.

There’s no tool for removing the ash and the small grill surface created some tight grease traps that made cleaning trickier, but that’s a small niggle for an affordable kamado.

  • Diagrams are large and easy to follow
  • Lightweight for a kamado grill

Score: 74/100

If you want to dip your toes into the world of kamado grills without spending a fortune, let us introduce you to this mini tabletop ceramic BBQ. The cooking surface is 27cm in diameter, making it large enough for a family, and assembly was incredibly straightforward – we only had to attach the legs and handle.

Without an adjustable grill, we found we had to watch our food carefully to avoid things catching and overcooking. Most dishes came off the grill nicely browned though – only our chicken breasts and burgers were a little dry. It’s an excellent choice if you’re looking for a compact, affordable BBQ.

How to choose a kamado grill

If you’re shopping for a ceramic kamado BBQ, these are the key factors to consider before investing.

  • The cooking system: The best ceramic grills come with a two-tier or adjustable cooking surface that allows you to move food further away from the heat, offering better control over the results. Some also come with pizza stones or heat deflectors, which let you grill indirectly. This is a great for large, whole pieces of meats (like a roast chicken) or for slow cooking.
  • Extra surfaces: Features such as side wings or tool hooks may not seem essential, but they can make a big overall difference to your grilling experience. Side wings are handy for keeping marinades and sauces nearby, while a wheeled stand can make it easier to move heavy ceramic BBQs from one place to another. It’s also worth looking for a model with a waterproof cover if you’re planning to store it outside in the colder months.
  • Weight and size: Ceramic kamado BBQs can be big and heavy. And we mean, seriously heavy – the ones in this list weigh up to 91kg. And while most come on wheeled stands, they can still be tricky to move. On the other hand, if you’re cooking for a crowd, you don’t want to be stuck with a kamado grill that’s too small. You’ll need at least a 15” kamado BBQ for a family of four.
  • The warranty: As with any large purchase, it’s wise to look at the product’s warranty, so you’re covered in case anything goes wrong. The warranties in this list range from around a year up to a lifetime so it’s worth considering how much protection you want before buying.

What is special about a kamado grill?

These egg-shaped BBQs are made from thick ceramic, which helps them retain heat more effectively than traditional BBQs. This allows them to reach higher temperatures, making them some of the best charcoal BBQs on the market for searing meat and rendering fat.

They also have adjustable air vents that control air flow – drawing it in through the base, feeding the charcoal and releasing it through the top. This circulates the air round the egg-shaped dome, allowing it to reach hot temperatures, while maintaining an even, consistent cook.

Ceramic grills are also built to last thanks to their heavy, premium designs. They’re an investment but one that will provide delicious results for years to come.

Are kamado BBQs worth it?

If you enjoy cooking outdoors, a kamado grill is well worth the investment. You can experiment with different ways of cooking across various meats and dishes, which means dinner time will never be boring.

They can be tricky to get to grips with at first due to the fact you need to control the air vents when cooking; however, once you’ve got the hang of it, they’re incredibly consistent thanks to their ceramic body. We found the food generally tasted better when cooked in a kamado grill compared to a standard BBQ – the circulating air results in a smokier, juicier finish.

Is a kamado a smoker or a grill?

Kamado BBQs are incredibly versatile and can be used as a standard grill or as a smoker. To use as a normal BBQ, open the air vents to create high heats for searing traditional BBQ food like burgers and sausages.

For smoking, keep the vents partially closed and add wood chips. The heat will stay low and steady – the perfect conditions for slow cooking meat.

Are kamado grills good for beginners?

Kamados aren’t the easiest to get to grips with as a beginner but after a few goes, you might be surprised by how intuitive they are. The temperature is controlled by air vents rather than dials or knobs, hence the steeper learning curve at first. They take longer to heat up than regular BBQs too, so some patience is required.

But the delicious results mean they’re worth putting the time in.

What are the cons of kamado grills?

The most obvious downside to ceramic BBQs is the price tag. The more premium models are expensive, with some on our list costing up to £1,450. There are some more affordable options too, but on average, these grills are pricier than a standard BBQ.

The ceramic design also makes them heavy, with some weighing in over 70kg, so you’ll need a permanent spot in your garden. However, most are built into a frame with wheels, making them slightly more portable than they may seem at first.

They’re also slower to heat than normal BBQs, so it’s worth planning in extra time if you’re serving a crowd.

The verdict: What is the best kamado grill to buy?

The Big Green Egg is the original kamado grill and scored 96/100 in our tests (read our Big Green Egg review for all the detail), but it's pricey, so we've focused here on the rival models.

Our overall winner is the Charles Bentley Ottimo Searsmith 18” Kamado BBQ, which scored the same as the Big Green Egg (96/100) but costs around £900 less.

If you're after a budget-friendly, entry level option, we recommend the Habitat Mini Tabletop Kamado BBQ, which can be popped away in the shed when you’re finished.
