best eco weed killers

Weeding doesn’t have to mean hours spent scraping and pulling at stubborn roots. With the best eco weed killers, you can simply spray them over an area to shrivel weeds from root to tip and prevent regrowth – all without causing risk to children, pets or wildlife.

If you’re looking for an alternative to typical glyphosate weed treatments (but still want something that actually works) you’ve come to the right place. To find out which eco weed killers are worth your money, the Good Housekeeping Institute recruited an at-home panel to test a range of leading brands and products in their outdoor spaces. We asked them to assess how effectively each product cleared weeds, telling us how quickly they saw results and how easy they were to apply.

Below is a quick list of the best eco weed killers we’ve tested. For our full reviews and what to consider before you buy, keep scrolling.

How we test eco weed killers

To put these eco weed killers to the test, the Good Housekeeping Institute recruited an at-home panel with a broad range of weed-riddled garden surfaces, covering flagstones, gravel and flower beds. The panel used each product in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and monitored the area for the following two weeks.

We then sent out a detailed feedback survey to find out how they performed, focusing on these key areas.

  • Performance: We asked how quickly and effectively the product killed weeds, whether there was any regrowth over the two-week period and whether the product worked better on certain types of weeds.
  • Clarity of instructions: We asked panellists to tell us how thorough the instructions were, particularly in relation safety and tips to protect other plants from damage.
  • Ease of application: How easy and comfortable was it to spray the product accurately over a targeted area.
  • Product design: We wanted to know whether the packaging was well designed, if there was any leakage or clogging from the bottle, and we wanted to know about the product’s versatility across different surface types and weather conditions.

Our in-house Good Housekeeping experts also tested each product in their own green spaces, considering the same factors as well as taking before-and-after images to capture a more detailed record of each product’s effectiveness. All this feedback and data was then combined to give each product a score out of 100.

Enviro Works Weed Gone Fast Acting Weedkiller

Pros

  • Spray trigger and hose included
  • Fast-acting results

Cons

  • Strong smell during use
  • May not fully kill deeper roots

Score: 83/100

“This is the best weed killer I have ever used,” one of our at-home testers said after trying this fast-acting formula, which shrivelled up some users’ weeds within an hour. It was particularly effective for clearing patios, with all testers reporting complete weed removal, and most didn’t see any regrowth over the full two-week testing period.

Application is just as straightforward thanks to the included spray trigger and hose, which let you target weeds precisely while avoiding nearby plants. The spray performed well without clogging, though some testers said there was a little drippage. There is a noticeable vinegary smell during use, and you may need to reapply it to fully eliminate deep roots – but for fast, visible results, this is a great pick.

WeedKil Glyphosate Free Weedkiller

Pros

  • Dries quickly
  • Dual spray and stream nozzle for targeted use

Cons

  • Less effective on tougher weeds like dandelions
  • Some dripping from the nozzle

Score: 82/100

This weed killer was a strong performer for most of our panel, with many testers seeing weeds die off within 24 hours and some spotting results in just a few hours. It worked well across a variety of surfaces – from patios to gravel and driveways – and its quick 30-minute drying time is a bonus for those with pets or children itching to get outside.

It’s very user-friendly too, thanks to a comfortable trigger and a dual spray-and-stream nozzle that makes targeted application easy. While it didn’t perform as strongly for everyone on hardy weeds like dandelions, most testers said it was effective overall. A slight smell and occasional dripping were noted, but neither were bad. This is another reliable choice.

Pros

  • Plenty of coverage for a small amount
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Less effective on larger, tougher weeds
  • Strong smell during application

Score: 82/100

This more affordable option impressed our panel with its reliable performance, especially given the price point. Most testers found it tackled weeds within two to three days, performing particularly well on smaller weeds between paving and gravel.

It’s easy to use straight out of the bottle, with a comfortable trigger and a handy spray-and-stream nozzle for accurate application. On the downside, we noted a strong vinegary smell and some slight dripping – plus, the opaque bottle makes it tricky to see how much is left. Older, tougher weeds may need a second treatment too, but it still delivered consistent results overall. A great value pick.

Roundup Weedkiller Total Optima with Pump Spray

Pros

  • Comes with an excellent pump spray, with refills available
  • Viewing window lets you keep an eye on liquid level

Cons

  • Expensive – though you get lots of coverage
  • Less effective on tougher, deep-rooted weeds

Score: 75/100

This one stands out for its thoughtfully designed pump sprayer, which makes light work of large patios, paths and driveways. The sprayer is comfortable to use over longer stretches (the trigger of a spray bottle may leave your hand aching after a big job) and still offers good control for targeted application. Our testers also appreciated the built-in viewing window for keeping tabs on how much liquid is left, as well as the safety lock.

The performance was good, particularly on smaller, younger weeds, with many testers spotting results within 24 hours. It’s not the toughest option we’ve tested – more stubborn, deep-rooted weeds may need a second pass – but for keeping larger areas neat, it's a good pick.

What does ‘eco’ weed killer mean exactly?

The term ‘eco’ isn’t tightly regulated when it comes to weed killers, but it generally refers to formulas that avoid synthetic herbicides like glyphosate and instead use naturally derived ingredients. These products are typically biodegradable and designed to break down quickly in the soil, reducing their impact on the wider environment.

What are acetic acid and pelargonic acid?

These are two of the most common active ingredients in eco weed killers – all the products in this roundup work via acetic acid or pelargonic acid.

Acetic acid (essentially a stronger form of vinegar) works by breaking down the plant’s cell structure, causing it to dry out and shrivel quickly.

Pelargonic acid, derived from plants, works in a similar way, stripping away the waxy coating on leaves and rapidly dehydrating them.

Both acetic acid and pelargonic acid work quickly but may not always kill the roots of tougher plants – they tend to perform best on smaller or younger weeds.

If these products are eco, why do kids and pets have to be kept away during application?

Even natural ingredients can be irritating in concentrated form. Many eco weed killers work by essentially ‘burning’ plant tissue, so they can also irritate skin or eyes if they come into contact with them while wet.

Once dry, however, most formulas break down quickly and are considered safe for pets, children and wildlife. That’s why guidance usually advises keeping them away only during and immediately after application.

What is the most effective, more environmentally friendly weed killer?

In our tests, acetic acid-based formulas delivered the fastest visible results, with some weeds shrivelling within hours. Just note that they tend to work best on smaller, surface-level weeds and may require repeat applications – or a bit more manual digging – to tackle deeper roots.
