If you your lawn to have clean, crisp edges, a good grass strimmer is essential. These clever tools are designed to cut grass and weeds in places where your lawn mower can’t usually reach, such as under garden furniture, in tight spaces, and along edges.

Strimmers can also be used to tackle overgrown grass, cutting it down to a manageable level for your lawn mower. They’re a very helpful and versatile tool to keep in your garden shed. And you don’t want to get stuck with an average one either. The very best strimmers will cut cleanly and consistently, while being easy to manoeuvre.

That’s why our garden expert has been busy testing a range of models on the market to find the best buys for trimming and edging. They now have very neat edges. Check out our top picks at a glance below and keep reading for our in-depth expert reviews.

The best strimmers for your lawn

how we test grass strimmers
Marcus Strong

How we test strimmers

We started off by doing our research and making a long list of grass trimmers and their features, weighing up the pros and cons of each. From here, it became clear that cordless strimmers offer better user experience and control, so we narrowed down our testing list to focus on these, with a few electric buys in the mix for those more keen on a plug-and-go set-up. We then got to work in the garden, seeing how they performed in the following key areas.

Cutting long grass: We tried each model on long grass, looking for clean cuts and counting how many passes were needed to get an even result. We took marks off for any that got stuck on rougher patches and weeds.

Edging performance: We look for neat trimming along edges and a handle that provides plenty of control in tighter spaces. The best grass trimmer should be easy to move round obstacles and under furniture, so we assess this, too.

Ease of use and design: We’re looking for a lightweight build, a comfortable handle, well-positioned power trigger, and good safety features. A strimmer should also be easy to clean, with parts that are easy to replace.

Finally, we assess the instructions, looking for clarity and detailed diagrams. We then combine all the scores and data to give each model an overall mark out of 100.

Karcher LTR 18-30 Cordless Grass Trimmer

Now 19% Off

Pros

  • Has a flowerbed guard to help you avoid cutting things you want to avoid
  • Coped just as well when cutting wet grass as it did dry
  • Good safety features, including a safety guard and cut-out switch
  • Easy to change the spools

Cons

  • Almost too powerful at times
  • Loud (similar to a motorcycle engine at a distance)

Score: 92/100

Lightweight yet powerful, this Karcher strimmer scored full marks in our ease-of-use and long grass tests. The 1.6mm nylon cord made light work of trimming and even coped with tough, woody stems and overgrown patches with just a few extra passes.

We loved the LCD display that tells you how much battery you have left, so you’re less likely to be caught out mid-trim, and the adjustable telescopic handle adds extra comfort when you’re using it for long periods.

If we’re being picky, it was almost too powerful at times, making it tricky to do delicate edging tasks, although the tiltable head helped us get a clean, straight cut. This was also one of the noisiest models we’ve tried, so we wouldn’t recommend using it frequently without ear protection. For quick garden maintenance though, it was hard to beat.

36V Max Power Cordless 38cm Grass Trimmer
Best strimmer for thick grass and weeds

Ryobi 36V Max Power Cordless 38cm Grass Trimmer

Pros

  • Handle is comfortable to hold, and the trigger is positioned well
  • Has a two-part safety trigger
  • Spool was easy to change
  • Easy to clean with plenty of advice in the instructions

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Heavy

Score: 91/100

With a 38cm cutting diameter and 2.0mm line thickness, this is our top pick for tougher grass and weeds. It cut through woody stems too, doing most tasks in a single pass, and the length of the pole makes it easy to reach under shrubs.

The trimmer was agile when cutting, but the weight of it made it uncomfortable to handle for too long. The included shoulder strap helped though, offering better control, more balance, and less strain on the wrists.

There’s no tilt function on the head, so we didn’t manage to achieve a straight edge on the lawn, but it was very good at cutting tall, thick grass and the battery gives you plenty of time to tackle a full garden.

Note, you will need to add a battery before you check out. We've quoted the price with battery above.

Bosch UniversalGrassCut 18V-26-500 Cordless Grass Trimmer

Pros

  • Head is small enough to reach into spaces a lawn mower can’t
  • Trigger and safety button are well positioned
  • Clear instructions and safety tips
  • Great for edging

Cons

  • Handle could be more comfortable
  • Needed a few passes to cut through tougher grass and weeds

Score: 88/100

This well-built Bosch model is one of the lightest models we’ve tried so it was easy to control and manoeuvre throughout testing. It handled long grass well, but we often needed to do a second pass over overgrown areas and woody stems to get a clean and tidy finish.

Its edging performance shone though, with the strimmer proving very reliable after a little practice. The rotating head delivered a neat, precise cut and the telescopic pole helped for reaching into tight spaces or working around trees or posts.

We had to stop halfway through cutting wet grass to clear away a build-up of trimmings, and the hard plastic handle was a little more uncomfortable than other strimmers, but overall, it’s a user-friendly option that does the job well.

Pros

  • Lightweight for its size
  • Good for larger gardens
  • Feels well-built
  • Instructions include cleaning, storage and safety advice

Cons

  • Gripping the safety button and trigger at the same time felt a little awkward
  • No automatic system for replacing the cord

Score: 88/100

This is a great alternative to the Ryobi higher up in this list if you have lots of grass to trim down but don’t want something as heavy. It was comfortable to use for a variety of tasks and scored highly in our ease-of-use test thanks to its straightforward controls, well-balanced design, and long-reach shaft.

It cut through long grass with ease, even when it was wet, but we often needed to follow up with a second pass to get a clean finish on thicker patches. The cutting head doesn’t rotate so it was harder to achieve straight edges, but its general trimming ability impressed. An ideal choice for garden maintenance when you don’t want to lug the lawn mower out.

Flymo 18V EasiTrim Plus 230 Cordless 2-in-1 Grass Trimmer

Pros

  • Comes with four spare blades
  • Lightweight and well balanced
  • Good battery life
  • Handle is very comfortable

Cons

  • Instructions are in a very small print
  • Holding the trigger down can be uncomfortable over long periods

Score: 87/100

This cordless grass trimmer uses plastic blades instead of nylon cord for cutting grass. These can be easier to maintain and replace but can break against hard surfaces like stones, paving, and walls. Blades are often quieter too and this proved the case here – the trimmer registered at 85dB (similar to the noise levels of a food blender).

It’s agile and easy to use, but its small cutting diameter makes it better suited to smaller gardens. That said, with a 45-minute battery life, you could easily tackle a larger space – you might just need to put in a few more steps!

It was easy to move round obstacles and the telescopic pole helped reach into tighter spots. It cut well along edges and delivered a tidy finish, but longer grass proved a challenge, needing a couple of extra passes to fully slice through the thicker sections of the lawn. Use it for regular upkeep rather than clearing jobs though, and this is a user-friendly, great value buy.

Pros

  • Detailed safety tips
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable handle
  • Good at edging

Cons

  • Cord needs to be replaced manually, and no extra cord is provided
  • Needed multiple passes to cut through thick grass

Score: 75/100

If you don’t need to tackle longer grass or tough weeds, this is a good, lightweight option. It was easy to switch the angle of the head into edging mode, but achieving a clean line sometimes took two passes. While the shaft is telescopic, we found it still wasn’t long enough to reach under large shrubs and bushes, but the trimmer was easy to guide round obstacles and holding down the trigger wasn’t uncomfortable over extended periods.

Tackling long, rough vegetation was a challenge as the strimmer tended to chew the grass rather than cut it cleanly, but that’s to be expected with a 1.2mm cord. Note, it started with a bit of a jolt but otherwise it was easy to use throughout testing.

Cons

  • Battery needed a firm push to remove it from the main body
  • Some features felt a little flimsy

Score: 75/100

An affordable choice, this trimmer is a smart buy for general garden maintenance. It has an adjustable head for easy edge cutting and a telescopic shaft for reaching under bushes and into tight spaces. It sometimes took several passes to achieve a sharp, defined edge but we liked the plant guard that keeps you from accidentally trimming them down too.

It struggled on denser patches of grass and overgrown areas, but the manual does say it’s designed only for grass cuttings. If you’re not bothered by slow progress and multiple passes though, it will still get the job done.

Pros

  • Feels well-built
  • Instructions are clear and include safety tips
  • Good for edging
  • Affordable
  • No need to worry about battery life or recharging

Cons

  • Spool needs to be wound manually
  • Designed to be operated with one hand
  • Need to keep an eye on where the cord is

Score: 74/100

If you don’t want to worry about your strimmer running out of battery halfway through the job, opt for this affordable corded model. It’s the lightest option we’ve tried at just 1.3kg and it’s designed to be used one-handed – although this put slight strain on our expert’s wrist when used for long periods.

The trimmer made quick work of edges, but the one-handed operation made it harder to control round corners, tree bases and fence posts, and it was the same story when dealing with longer, thicker grass.

We also found the cord broke when we used it on tougher jobs (which isn’t surprising as it’s just 1.5mm thick), and replacing it was tricky as there’s no automatic system. Stick to light trimming and edging, though, and this shouldn’t prove too much of an issue.

How to choose a grass strimmer

Before adding a grass trimmer to your basket, consider these key factors.

Size: Each model will have a different cutting width. This refers to the size of the path it can cut in one pass. If you have a larger garden, choose a model that lets you cut more in one go to save time and effort. You’ll find more on this below.

Tilting head: If you’re planning to use your strimmer to maintain neat edges along your lawn, look for a model with an adjustable head. This allows you to tilt the blade and get a closer, more defined cut.

Type and battery life: We’ve mainly focused on cordless models in this list as they’re more user-friendly. However, it’s worth noting the typical battery life if you’ve got a big garden. No one wants their battery running out mid-trim!

Line thickness: This refers to the thickness of the nylon cutting cord in most models. Thicker cords are better suited to overgrown areas and tough weeds, while thinner ones are good for general garden maintenance. Keep reading for more information on this.

What size grass trimmer do I need?

The size of your grass trimmer will depend on a few factors, including how big your garden is and how often you plan to use it.

A strimmer with a cutting width of up to 25cm would be ideal for maintaining small gardens (under 100m2), while one with a width of up to 30cm would be best for a medium garden (up to 300m2). If you have a large garden, a cutting width of over 30cm will save you time and effort.

Obviously, a larger cutting width will get through more grass in a single pass, but these models are often bigger and heavier to carry. Think about how often you’ll be trimming your lawn – if you plan to maintain it regularly, a smaller, more lightweight model might be a better pick.

What line thickness is best for a grass trimmer?

The line thickness of a grass trimmer tells you how thick the nylon cutting cord is. Thicker lines are tougher and better for weeds, while thinner lines are better for light trimming and edging, so the best line thickness will depend on what you’re cutting.

A line thickness of up to 1.6mm is suited to everyday trimming, while those with a line thickness of 2.0mm are better for dealing with weeds.

Some of the grass strimmers we’ve tried have plastic blades instead of cords; these are typically very precise and sharp, working best on long grass. However, they may snap on stones, concrete or hard edges, so opt for a nylon cord model if you plan on doing lots of edging.

Cordless vs corded strimmer: which is best?

We’ve mainly reviewed cordless grass strimmers so far, as these provide excellent manoeuvrability and you don’t need to worry about tripping over – or cutting through – the power cord.

Of course, the downside is the battery life, with some cordless trimmers only lasting around 20 minutes in our testing. If you have lots of edging to get through, it might be worth opting for an electric strimmer. Our current favourite, the Black+Decker 250W Electric Strimmer 23cm String Trimmer, has a six-metre cord so you’ll still have plenty of room to work with.

What's the difference between a strimmer and a brushcutter?

Most gardens in the UK will only need a strimmer, as these can easily cut through grass and light weeds. On the other hand, brushcutters are normally used for thick weeds, nettles, brambles, and overgrown areas as they have a more heavy-duty build and stronger motors.

best strimmers
Marcus Strong

The verdict: what is the best strimmer to buy?

Our favourite model is the Karcher LTR 18-30 Cordless Grass Trimmer, which is lightweight, yet powerful, coping with almost all the trimming tasks we threw at it.

For lighter garden maintenance and edging, opt for the Bosch Universal Grass Cut 18V-26-500 Cordless Grass Trimmer as it delivered a neat finish and has a telescopic pole that can reach under hedges.

If you need to tackle long grass, overgrown areas and rougher patches, the Ryobi 36V Max Power Cordless 38cm Grass Trimmer is our top pick, thanks to its thicker cord and larger cutting width.
