best travel irons

Whether you’re travelling for work, attending a destination wedding or simply want to look your best in your holiday snaps, being able to keep your clothes crease-free while you’re away can make a real difference. The best travel irons and compact steam irons are small enough to justify packing, while offering enough power to smooth the toughest creases from your outfits after they emerge crumpled from your suitcase (even linen!).

Compared with their full-sized siblings, travel irons are remarkably light and compact, with some weighing just 500g. Many offer dual steamer and iron functionality, too, giving you the option of quick touch-ups without an ironing board, but still allowing you to press a sharp collar when you need to.

To help you choose, we’ve tested a range of the best travel irons for your next trip. Below are all our favourites in score order, but keep scrolling for our full reviews.

How we test travel irons

When we test travel irons at the Good Housekeeping Institute, we look for models that combine strong crease-busting performance with a compact, lightweight design. The best travel irons should be small and easy to tuck into a suitcase, while still having enough power to tackle wrinkles. Here’s everything we consider in our reviews.

  • Ironing performance: Our experts test each travel iron on a range of fabrics, including nylon, polycotton, linen and thick cotton canvas. We assess how effectively it removes creases and how smoothly it glides across different materials.
  • Temperature performance: We measure how accurately each iron reaches and maintains its temperature settings and how long it takes to heat up. We want to see reliable, stable heating across all settings, without long waiting times.
  • Travel-friendly design: We assess how compact each iron is and how easy it is to pack and unpack, including features such as folding handles and travel pouches.
  • Ease of use: Our testers evaluate how intuitive the controls are, whether the symbols and settings are easy to understand and how comfortable the iron is to hold and manoeuvre. We also look at features such as the steam boost and water spray, and whether they’re easy to use while ironing.
  • Build quality: We look at how well constructed each iron feels, how easy the water tank is to fill and empty, and whether the soleplate resists scratches from zips and buttons.
  • Instructions: We check that the instructions are clear and easy to follow, with sufficient information on settings, maintenance, safety and water requirements.

    These are our winners.

Pros

  • Excellent ironing performance
  • Light, compact design

Cons

  • Controls are a little stiff

Score: 88/100

Good things do come in small packages. This iron is a worthy addition to your holiday packing list, pressing creases out of all kinds of fabrics with ease. If you love wearing breathable linen on holiday (but don’t love the wrinkles), this iron excels at smoothing this tricky fabric in just a few passes. We also found that it heats quickly and accurately, holding a consistent temperature during use.

The pod-like shape isn’t the most comfortable to hold – it lacks a proper handle – so if you’re planning to iron lots of garments, you may want to look for a bigger model. On the other hand, the compact design won’t take up much precious suitcase space and it’s very light at just 500g. The storage pouch is a nice bonus, too. Overall, it’s a great little iron that doesn’t compromise on performance.

Pros

  • Comfortable and light to manoeuvre
  • Great value

Cons

  • Steam boost activated with the dial instead of a button

Score: 82/100

This user-friendly travel iron is a great value buy. Unlike some models, it has a proper handle, making the design comfortable to hold and move around without adding too much bulk. It glides smoothly across fabrics and the controls are straightforward, too – just note that the steam boost is activated with the dial, which is a little more fiddly than pressing a button.

It reached the right temperature for each setting, which helped us smooth the wrinkles out of our test clothing well, especially on polycotton and nylon. It struggled a little more when tackling deep creases on linen and thick cotton, but it should do the job for most holiday fabrics. Overall, it’s a brilliant little device for a tenner.

Pros

  • Foldable handle saves space
  • Excellent crease removal

Cons

  • On the larger side compared to others

Score: 82/100

Dunelm’s travel iron is a touch larger than some of the super-mini models, but the clever folding handle helps it stay packable. It was also one of the best performers when it came to crease removal, easily smoothing out crumpled nylon, polycotton and linen – it was only on thick cotton that the deepest creases were harder to remove. It heated up quickly and accurately, too.

While the 80ml tank is a decent size, it only took eight minutes for us to drain it, so you may have to pause for a top-up if you’re ironing multiple garments. The tank is also located in the handle, which makes filling and emptying it – and keeping an eye on the water level – a little awkward. But on the whole, this is an excellent travel iron at a great value price.

Pros

  • Performs well on linen
  • Easy to see inside the water tank, with clear water level markings

Cons

  • Struggled with some deep creasing

Score: 81/100

This Russell Hobbs travel iron looks and functions much like a regular iron, just on a smaller scale. It performed particularly well on linen, gliding easily and leaving the material virtually wrinkle-free. On other fabrics, it did struggle to remove deep, stubborn creases (especially on thick cotton), but you shouldn’t have an issue with light-to-moderate crumpling.

The water spray is generous – perhaps overly so – and our testers appreciated the comprehensive instructions that came with the product. You have to activate the steam function via the dial instead of the button, which is a little annoying, but otherwise, it’s an easy-to-use iron that feels balanced and nimble. Another great value pick.

Pros

  • Able to steam as well as iron
  • Long runtime thanks to larger water tank

Cons

  • Relatively large and heavy
  • Not dual voltage

Score: 78/100

This two-in-one iron is a little bulkier (and pricier) than other models, but the clever design gives you the option of steaming clothes, too. This is great for refreshing clothes on a hanger without needing an ironing board – so if your holiday wardrobe contains both billowy dresses and crisp collars, this is the product for you.

It heats quickly and removes wrinkles effectively, although deep creases on thick cotton were a challenge. Our testers noted that while the pointed soleplate is great for getting between buttons, the top-heavy design can feel a little unbalanced, and the power cord gets in the way of your wrist. On the other hand, the iron does benefit from a much larger tank than the mini models in this list, lasting 40 minutes before needing a top-up. A good, versatile pick if you have the suitcase space.

Note that this iron isn’t dual voltage, so it may not function properly in countries with low-voltage power grids, such as the USA, Canada and Japan. For more information, see our FAQs.

Pros

  • Super small and light
  • Removable tank is easy to fill up

Cons

  • Slightly awkward controls
  • Slow to heat up

Score: 77/100

If you prefer to pack light, this little Morphy Richards iron is easy to squeeze into a suitcase. It’s a simple model, with just one temperature – there’s just a switch on the front to turn the steam on and off – so you don’t need to adjust it for different fabrics. In testing, this translated to a good performance on nylon and polycotton, but linen and thick cotton were harder to smooth completely.

The small design is great for getting into tight spaces and between buttons, and it’s comfortably light, too. Just note that although our testers found the shape fairly easy to manoeuvre, the handle can get quite warm and steam might occasionally catch your hand, so take care. It’s also slow to heat (likely due to the low wattage), taking over a minute to get to temperature. Overall, though, it’s a nimble little iron that will do the job well on lighter fabrics.

Pros

  • Able to steam as well as iron
  • Comfortable to use with straightforward controls

Cons

  • Not dual voltage
  • On the larger side with a non-folding handle

Score: 76/100

This is another two-in-one iron and steamer that allows you to steam your clothes vertically or press them on a board. Although it’s on the bulky side, with a large handle that doesn’t fold away, it’s comfortable to use and is significantly smaller than the Morphy Richards steamer model above. It also benefits from a good-sized water tank, with an impressive 22-minute run time recorded in testing.

Instead of a dial, this iron has a single, non-adjustable temperature, which we found fluctuated quite a bit during testing – by 31°C on average – but it easily removed creases from nylon and linen. Thick cotton was more of a challenge, with the iron struggling to move across it smoothly, while it was hard to get wrinkles out of polycotton. But overall, this is an easy-to-use pick that provides extra versatility.

This model isn't dual voltage, so it isn’t suitable for use in countries with lower-voltage power supplies, including the USA, Canada and Japan. See our FAQs for more information.

How to choose a travel iron

When deciding what kind of compact steam iron to pack for your next holiday, consider the following specs:

  • Size and weight: Travel irons can vary from relatively small to truly tiny. If you tend to pack light, look for a model weighing less than 700g. Foldable handles can make it easier to squeeze larger designs into your case.
  • Dual voltage: Travel irons with dual voltage capability use either a dial or an automatic switch to adapt to the power supplies of different countries without blowing a fuse. Read more about this feature below.
  • Steam capability: Some travel irons can also function as garment steamers, allowing them to steam clothes vertically as well as iron them on a board. Steaming is ideal for light, delicate fabrics, while ironing is best for a sharp, ultra-smooth finish. A two-in-one design is ideal for a varied holiday wardrobe.
  • Performance: Some travel irons perform better on some fabrics than others. Before committing to a model, consider which fabrics you were most on holiday and choose accordingly.

What does dual voltage mean?

Dual-voltage travel irons can operate on both 110-120V and 220-240V power supplies, making them suitable for use in countries with different electrical systems. This means you can use them in destinations such as the USA, Canada and Japan (lower voltage), as well as the UK and most of Europe (higher voltage), so long as you have the right plug adapter.

A travel iron without dual voltage is only compatible with one voltage strength, so it may not work properly – or at all – in countries with a different power supply. If you regularly travel outside Europe, make sure you select a dual-voltage model from our roundup.

Are travel irons good?

Travel irons are great for removing any fresh creases your clothes suffer during transit. They can handle touch-ups on things like shirts, trousers and dresses well, while slotting easily inside a suitcase. They’re excellent for keeping business clothes or holiday outfits looking their best without having to rely on hotel facilities.

On the downside, travel irons are less powerful than regular, full-sized irons. They may lack the wattage and steam power required to press deep-set creases out of heavy fabrics such as denim, and due to their small water tanks, are usually best suited to ironing a couple of garments at a time. But, for staying sharp on the go, they’re great to have on hand and there are some good affordable options on our list.

Which is better, a travel iron or a travel steamer?

This depends on what you’re packing – a compact steam iron is the better choice if you want crisp, wrinkle-free shirts, dresses or linen, as it presses fabric flat and tackles stubborn creases more effectively.

A travel steamer is quicker for freshening up lightly creased clothes and delicate fabrics, but it won’t produce the same sharp finish. Read our best clothes steamers guide to find our favourite travel-sized options.

If you want the best of both worlds, consider a two-in-one iron and steamer like the Morphy Richards Turbosteam 2 in 1 Garment Steamer and Iron or the Beldray 2 in 1 Iron & Garment Steamer.

Can I take a travel steam iron on an airplane?

Yes, mains-powered travel irons are generally permitted by airlines in both hand luggage and checked baggage. Make sure the iron’s water tank is completely empty before you travel.
