The best toilet brushes that are actually hygienic, look good and scrub well – and one even squirts its own cleaner

From sleek silicone and traditional plastic to natural, plant-based brushes.

best toilet brushes

You probably prefer not to think about the toilet brush lurking behind your loo, but you and I both know it’s probably due an upgrade. If yours has been sitting in a murky puddle and gathering ‘particles’ for years, know that there is another way.

From aerated brush holders and sleek silicone scrubbers to designs that, yes, squirt their own toilet cleaner with the push of a button, I’ve tried just about every style of toilet brush out there (I have a very clean loo). Battling limescale, stains and everyday scrubbing over several months, I’ve sorted the best toilet brushes from the rest – and seen first-hand how they really fare over time.

These are my best toilet brushes in one handy list. For my full reviews, keep scrolling.

How I tested these toilet brushes

Not to be TMI about it, but each of these bog brushes has done a fair bit more labour than a cursory swish around a white toilet bowl. Much to the confusion of visitors, I’ve lived with all of them (and a few that didn’t make it into the list) for about six months. Which means yes, they’ve been used for... living.

Each one has seen extensive everyday cleaning as well as deep scrubbing with bleach-based toilet cleaner. I also live in a very hard water area, so limescale is a constant battle – and not every toilet brush is up for the fight. In this list, I’ve taken into account:

  • Everyday cleaning ability
  • Power-scrubbing skills for deep cleaning
  • Ability to get deep into the toilet bowl bend and under the rim
  • Comfort and easy manoeuvring
  • Considered brush holder design, taking into account hygiene, aeration and looks
  • Ease of maintenance

These are my favourite toilet brushes, reviewed in full.

MooStar Silicone Toilet Brush with Dispenser

Pros

  • Dispenses toilet cleaner from a refillable chamber
  • Silicone bristles trap less water and grime
  • Sleek design available in several different finishes

Cons

  • Silicone bristles struggle with limescale deposits

There’s lots to love about this clever silicone toilet brush, but the main draw is its self-cleaning ability – you can squirt a dose of toilet cleaner gel with the push of a button. The quick-draining silicone head traps less gunk than a normal plastic toilet brush too, while the regular application of toilet cleaner keeps it hygienic.

To refill it, simply unscrew the handle and add any (non-bleach-based) toilet cleaner gel into the reservoir. The slim brush holder, which is available in lots of different finishes, looks pretty good next to your loo (as good as a toilet brush can), and also comes with sticky pads to wall-mount it if you prefer.

However, while the soft silicone bristles are great for everyday cleaning, they aren’t so good at scrubbing away tough limescale. For carrying out deep cleans from a challenging starting point, you may want something sturdier.

Best traditional toilet brush and holder

Pros

  • Ventilated holder for better drying and hygiene
  • Very dense bristles, which scrub limescale well
  • Light and comfortable to hold

Cons

  • Bristles trap more grime than silicone

This toilet brush may look basic, but it’s a well-designed version of a classic. The neat holder has a ventilated bottom that helps the brush stay dry – key for preventing bacteria buildup – and a lid that pops open when you pick the brush up.

The plastic bristles are dense and tough enough to scrub away limescale deposits (with the help of one of the best toilet cleaners), which is crucial for anyone living in hard water areas and something silicone brushes struggle with. Just note that a plastic brush will trap more grime than a silicone one, so make sure you rinse it in the flush and disinfect regularly by leaving it in the bowl with some toilet cleaner.

The handle is comfortable and lightweight too, and it’s available in white, grey or black for a little variety. An excellent all-rounder that’s worth the upgrade.

Best silicone toilet brush

Pros

  • Flexible silicone pad gets deep into the bowl
  • Rubbery bristles drain quickly and trap less grime
  • Lightweight and nimble

Cons

  • Less scrubbing power than a traditional plastic brush

I tried several silicone toilet brushes in my six-month-long review, and the thin bristle pad on this one was my favourites overall. The design is more flexible than many others, allowing you to easily follow the contours of the toilet bowl during cleaning and scrub away grime with the rubbery bristles.

It’s light to manoeuvre and drains quickly, too – a quick tap on the toilet bowl and it’s ready to pop back in the holder – and the shape is well-suited to getting under the rim. It’s pretty soft, though, so not the best for scrubbing limescale.

I appreciate that the tall holder is dark grey on the inside, which saves you from seeing anything that may have gathered in the bottom. For a little less, you can buy a version with a smaller brush holder, or for a little more, you can get one with a neat caddy for storing a bottle of toilet cleaner.

Best plastic-free toilet brush

Pros

  • Made from beech wood and plant fibre
  • Natural bristles are soft, yet strong
  • Open enamel pot lets brush air-dry

Cons

  • Bristles tend to flatten over time
  • Prone to staining from chemical toilet cleaners

With a beach wood handle and plant fibre bristles, this plant-based toilet brush was a surprisingly competent loo scrubber. The texture of the bristles, which feels firmer than silicone but softer than plastic, is perfect for everyday cleaning – and does a decent job of hard scrubbing, too.

It comes in an attractive enamel pot, which doesn’t do much to hide the brush but does keep it well aerated. The price may seem steep, but you can buy the brush alone (and keep it in a pot of your choosing) for less than 10 pounds. That’s good to know, if cumulative water damage, mould or bristle flattening ever render your brush unusable.

Chemical toilet cleaners of the bright blue or green variety can stain this toilet brush, so if you’re making the switch, consider adding Bower’s colourless, naturally-derived loo cleaner to your basket.

Best curved toilet brush

Pros

  • Dense, sturdy plastic bristles provide strong scrubbing action
  • Thin brush is good for getting into corners of toilet bowl
  • High-quality metal construction

Cons

  • Brush head is quite large – not suitable for small toilets
  • Magnet in the brush holder is a little too strong

If you have a square-shaped toilet, the narrow design of this curved brush is great for getting into tight corners and under the rim. It’s surprisingly large and heavy, but the thick metal handle and circle of tough plastic bristles provide excellent scrubbing action.

The holder leaves the brush exposed, which is great for keeping it dry – you’ll just want to ensure your brush stays pristine enough to leave on display. My one gripe is that the magnet that keeps the brush in place is a bit too strong, causing the holder to get dragged around when you're trying to take the brush out.

The big brush head is a somewhat tight fit in my loo, and I’ve also seen reviewers saying it can’t reach below the water line of their toilet – something to bear in mind if you have a small loo.

Best disposable toilet brush

Pros

  • Disposable and biodegradable pads clip on and flush away
  • Each pad contains a dose of toilet cleaner
  • Fresh citrus scent

Cons

  • Relies on chemical cleaning – not much scrubbing action
  • Cost of refills can add up
  • Feels quite flimsy

If you’re really squeamish about reusing anything loo-related, this flushable cleaning pad system is the toilet brush hater’s toilet brush. When you need to clean, simply clip on one of the pads, dunk and wipe it around, then unclip it directly into the toilet bowl before flushing away. The slim handle gets stored next to your toilet.

The pads, which are biodegradable and break up like toilet paper (making them safe for your plumbing), are impregnated with blue-green toilet cleaner which has a lovely citrus scent. They do a good job of cleaning up grime, but they feel more like a wipe – this isn’t really a tool for scrubbing off tough stains.

You should also bear in mind that the starter pack only comes with four single-use pads, and if you use them regularly, the cost of refills could get pretty expensive. But if you’re that concerned about hygienic, hands-free toilet cleaning, it could be a price worth paying.

Best for cleaning under the rim

Pros

  • Attractive matt ecru design looks premium
  • Flexible three-pronged head can get into nooks and crannies

Cons

  • Head is quite stiff so not very easy to manoeuvre
  • Quite expensive

The head of Joseph Joseph’s premium toilet brush may look like something from Stranger Things, but the overall design feels undeniably high-end. Although it’s cheaper to buy in glossy white, I love the matt finish that comes in ecru or black.

The three-pronged head handles everyday cleaning well and is particularly adept at scrubbing under the toilet rim. The spaced-out spikes also drain water quickly and don’t trap as much grime as the dense bristles on a traditional brush. On the downside, it feels firmer and less flexible than other silicone brushes, which can make it a little difficult to manoeuvre – but that means it does a decent job of hard scrubbing.

Best budget toilet brush

Argos Home Toilet Brush, White and Silver

Pros

  • Attractive design
  • Great value

Cons

  • Grime and moisture can build up in the brush holder

We’ve all had a basic toilet brush like this one in our homes, but Argos’s struck me as a good version for a great price. It looks nice, the brush does a great job of scrubbing dirt and limescale, and the holder has a metal cover that stays attached to the brush (but doesn’t touch the water when you’re cleaning).

The metal hasn’t corroded at all, even after months of use. And if you’re brave, the plastic holder would also be easy to clean by hand... though I can’t say I’ve ever done so. Just note that, like all toilet brushes of this kind, it’s not easy to keep clean and dry – scroll down for our guidance on that. Overall, though, it’s an affordable brush that does the job and looks good.

Best for tough limescale deposits

Fazmoss Toilet Cleaning Pumice Stone, Pack of 2

Toilet Cleaning Pumice Stone, Pack of 2
Best for tough limescale deposits

Fazmoss Toilet Cleaning Pumice Stone, Pack of 2

Pros

  • Effective and chemical-free way to shift difficult limescale
  • Long handle keeps hands out of water

Cons

  • Elbow grease required

While technically not a toilet brush, an honourable mention has to go to these long-handled pumice stones. With a little elbow grease, one of these can shift extreme limescale buildup that brushes and bleach can’t – just make sure both surfaces are wet and get scraping.

The stones can wear down quickly, but they’re inexpensive for a pack of two and will surprise you with how well they work. If you don’t fancy getting your rubber gloves on, the long handle is also great for keeping hands out of the water. A must for those in hard water areas, or for salvaging the toilet you’re always embarrassed of.

What is the best type of toilet brush?

Having tried every kind of toilet brush out there, I’ve found that the best choice depends on the balance you want between scrubbing power and hygiene. Traditional designs such as the Mr Siga Toilet Brush and Holder are still the most effective at shifting stubborn limescale so, if you live in a hard water area and deal with heavy deposits often, you may want to stick with plastic.

However, my personal pick is MooStar Silicone Toilet Brush with Dispenser. Quick-draining silicone bristles trap less water and grime than dense plastic ones, making them feel more hygienic – and they look sleek, too. The MooStar’s built-in toilet cleaner dispenser also encourages more frequent cleaning, helping to prevent stains from building up in the first place.

How often should you replace a toilet brush?

With proper maintenance (see below), a good toilet brush can last for years. As long as the bristles aren’t completely flattened, heavily discoloured or shedding away, toilet brushes can be kept in use indefinitely. Just make sure you disinfect the brush and holder regularly to prevent bacteria buildup.

A plant-based toilet brush like the Bower Plastic-Free Toilet Brush may need replacing more frequently (about twice a year), because the natural materials could be more prone to breaking down with repeated moisture exposure.

How do I keep my toilet brush hygienic?

Don’t worry – to keep your toilet brush clean, you don’t have to hand wash it or (cringe) put it in the dishwasher. As our household advice editor, Katie Mortram, explains, it can all happen in the toilet bowl.

‘I clean my toilet brush at the same time as my toilet,’ Katie says. ‘I scrub toilet cleaner around the bowl thoroughly with the brush, then let the brush soak in the water with the cleaner for 10 minutes to disinfect. You should also deep clean the holder every week by draining it out, then soaking for 10 minutes in toilet cleaner mixed with cold water.’

Once you’ve disinfected your brush, let it air-dry as much as possible by trapping the handle between the toilet seat and bowl while keeping the lid open.

Final verdict: what is the best toilet brush?

For all-round cleaning performance and usability, the Mr Siga Toilet Brush and Holder came out on top as a well-designed version of the classic plastic brush. It’s great at scrubbing stains, and the ventilated brush holder helps keep it dry.

If limescale and tough stains aren’t a big issue for you, though, consider switching to a hygienic silicone brush, which clings much less to water and grime. The Joseph Joseph Flex Toilet Brush stood out for its flexible head, while my favourite, the MooStar Silicone Toilet Brush with Dispenser has an in-built toilet cleaner dispenser that makes maintenance easy.
