best stain remover for clothes

Red wine, curry sauce and lipstick stains may be the marks of a life well-lived, but they can instantly ruin a white shirt or (horror) an expensive dress. Luckily, the best stain removers for clothes are here to save your wardrobe, erasing everything from that morning coffee disaster to ancient under-arm sweat stains.

A grease stain has a different chemical composition to a wine stain, and a great stain remover needs to be versatile enough to tackle them all. That’s why the Good Housekeeping Institute experts have tested a wide range of market-leading stain removers on 18 different tricky substances, both fresh and dried-on.

We’ve also included several different stain remover types, from washing machine powders and spray-on pre-treatments to handy stain pens. Below are our favourites in one tidy list, but keep scrolling for our in-depth reviews.

How we test stain removers

Here’s what we analyse to score each stain remover out of 100.

Stain testing in the lab: We test each stain remover on cotton and polycotton using laboratory-prepared stain sheets. These include blood, sebum (a major component of sweat stains), cooked beef fat, foundation, coffee and red wine stains, among others. After washing, we use a machine called the DigiEye to measure how effectively each stain has been removed.

Pre-treatment testing: For products that work as a pre-treatment, we create our own freshly-stained sheets using red wine, tea, coffee, mustard, oil, curry, lipstick, foundation, mud and biro. These are treated immediately after staining and then assessed by an in-house expert to see whether the marks have disappeared or remain visible.

Colour fading: To assess colour retention, we test colour-safe products on cotton and polycotton swatches in navy and yellow, before measuring colour changes with our DigiEye machine. If a product claims to keep whites bright, we assess its white-retention performance, too.

At-home panel feedback: We also send each stain remover to 10 panellists, who use them for up to two weeks before reporting back on their stain removal performance, ease of use, fragrance and any damage or residue on clothing.

We also assess each product in-house for its design, dispensing method, and the clarity of its instructions before awarding a final score.

Pros

  • Strong all-round stain removal results
  • Large scoop makes dosing easy and accurate
  • Clear instructions

Cons

  • Can cause fading on dark-coloured cotton
  • Struggled with grass and mud in lab tests

Score: 83/100

This oxygen-based stain remover was a huge hit with our panel of at-home testers, the vast majority of whom said they would choose it over their current brand. “It was amazing at restoring dirty, stained socks to their former pure white appearance,” one said, while another said they were “extremely impressed” after it lifted fake tan stains with ease.

In our lab tests, it shifted a variety of stains including curry sauce, tomato purée, cooked beef fat and even sebum (a really tricky one) in the washing machine. It worked well as a pre-treatment, too, especially when used on fresh food and drink stains such as coffee and wine. It wasn’t a magic bullet for absolutely everything – grass and mud proved to be its Achilles’ heel – but its overall performance was outstanding.

This versatile powder can be used in your detergent drawer, as a long pre-soak, or as a fast targeted pre-treatment if you make it into a paste. With clear dosage instructions and a handy scoop, it’s a doddle to use, too. An excellent all-rounder and worthy winner.

Pros

  • Effective on a wide variety of old and immediate stains
  • Easy to use – just spray on, wait up to five minutes and wash
  • Suitable for nearly all fabrics

Cons

  • Requires gloves when using

Score: 81/100

Also: best for coffee stains and best for ink stains

‘This product puts other stain removers to shame,’ one of our panellists said of this spray-on pre-treatment, while another added: ’It’s the best stain remover I have ever tried – 10 out of 10’. In fact, every single one of our home testers was impressed with its ability to shift even the most stubborn, ancient stains in just one or two washes.

In the lab, it removed fresh stains such as red wine, lipstick, biro and mud effortlessly. It performed well on dried-on stains, too, including wine, coffee, baby food, makeup, blood and cooked beef fat. Just note that it was consistently more effective on cotton than polycotton.

It’s simple to use – the targeted foam spray is accurate and clings well to fabric, plus you only need to wait up to five minutes before washing the item as normal. You should wear gloves when using this strong formula, especially as the nozzle has a tendency to drip.

Pros

  • Has a built-in brush that helps you work the product into the fabric
  • Compact and easy to store

Cons

  • Tends to over-dispense and drip down the side of the bottle

Score: 80/100

Also: best for red wine stains and best for makeup stains

This clever stain remover comes with a mini scrubbing brush on the applicator, which allows you to work the product in while agitating the fabric fibres. ‘I loved the brush head – I could see the stain starting to melt away after the 10-minute wait time,’ one panellist enthused.

In the lab, it performed particularly well on cooked beef fat stains, as well as tricky sweat marks, coffee and tomato purée. As a pre-treatment on fresh stains, it excelled, leaving tea and biro completely gone and most other stains (including wine, curry and lipstick) with just a small trace remaining.

While the brush head is a useful bonus, the liquid continues flowing as you work, which can lead to waste and leave the bottle a little sticky. We measured minimal colour fading, though, so we wouldn’t worry about this causing damage.

Lidl Formil Oxi Action Stain Remover Powder For Whites

Pros

  • Excellent white retention on cotton and polycotton
  • Great price for a 1-kilo tub
  • Clear, straightforward instructions

Cons

  • Only pre-treatment option is soaking for up to six hours
  • Can only be bought in-store

Score: 80/100

Lidl’s affordable stain powder stood out for its ability to retain and restore bright whites, which was reflected both in our lab results and comments from several panellists. ‘The product is good for freshening up white fabric and making it look like new,’ one user commented, while another said it was ‘effective at getting my whites looking whiter’.

In our lab tests, it put in an excellent performance on coffee, tomato purée and baby food stains, while wine, curry, tea, blood and beef fat also cleaned up well. It struggled more with grass, mud and especially sebum – so it may be less effective on sweat stains and grubby pillowcases.

To use this stain powder, all you need to do is put a scoop or two in the drawer of your washing machine. Just note that unlike some other powders, it’s not designed for use as a quick pre-treatment in paste form – just a pre-soak, which can take several hours. Overall, it’s a well-priced supermarket pick for perking up dull whites.

Pros

  • Good value
  • Great for brightening whites

Cons

  • Tub feels flimsier and is more difficult to open than a screw-top

Score: 79/100

This is another inexpensive supermarket powder that’s great for restoring your whites. ‘I used it on white bedding and towels, which made them come out bright and fresh looking,’ one panellist said. We didn’t detect any dulling or greying in our lab tests, either.

Asda’s oxy powder scored similarly to Lidl’s, above, achieving its highest scores when removing tomato purée, baby food and blood from cotton fabric. Its performance was still strong on other stains like wine, curry and beef fat, too. Like Lidl’s oxy powder, it struggled more with grass, mud and sebum stains – though Asda managed a better job on the latter.

This product can’t be used as a targeted pre-treatment (only a long pre-soak) and testers found the tub-style packaging slightly difficult to open the first time. But overall, this is another strong pick for keeping whites white.

Pros

  • Strong performance on fresh stains
  • Clear instructions and dosing scoop included

Cons

  • Tended to dull whites and fade darks

Score: 79/100

This stain remover powder claims to shift stains even in a short 30-minute wash, which was backed up by some of our panel feedback. “Very effective at removing oil stains from clothing in a quick wash cycle,” said one, while another said the powder “removed everyday stains effectively and left clothes smelling fresh”. This product also promises “intense freshness against odours”, and while most panellists enjoyed the “clean, pleasant” fragrance, some found it overwhelming. That will come down to personal preference, though.

Our experts found it a good everyday performer that works particularly well as a pre-treatment on fresh stains, shifting red wine, tea, coffee, curry and mud effectively. Its performance was less strong on dried-in marks, while at-home testers found they had to soak and repeat a few times to shift older stains.

Overall, it’s a good stain remover if you usually run quick wash cycles – but otherwise, Vanish Gold is the better value option from this brand.

Pros

  • Strong stain removal performance on cotton
  • Fresh fragrance was well-liked by panel

Cons

  • No scoop provided

Score: 77/100

Our lab tests showed this non-bio oxy powder is great at removing stains from cotton, lifting even tricky substances such as sweat, makeup, grass and mud well. It was less impressive on polycotton, working well on food and drink stains but struggling with some others.

This powder doesn’t come with a scoop (you have to measure it with your own teaspoon) and we did have some issues with the packaging, which testers noted was quite flimsy and could be prone to tipping over.

Nevertheless, our panel testers felt it removed everyday stains effectively, saying they were “impressed with the stain removal”, while the “lovely fresh fragrance” was popular, too. We also like that you can use this versatile powder as a targeted pre-treatment, pre-soak or a washing machine powder. A good pick if you need to avoid enzyme cleaners.

Pros

  • Good results on food and drink stains in particular
  • Compact packaging that reduces plastic waste

Cons

  • Pouch packaging is much flimsier than a tub, with no scoop provided

Score: 75/100

Also: best for curry stains

This oxy powder, which comes in a low-waste pouch, is a standout performer on blood stains and excellent on food and drink stains like baby food, curry and coffee. ‘Easy to use and it worked very well at removing coffee stains from a white tablecloth,’ one of our at-home testers told us.

While it was weaker on grass, mud, makeup and sebum, many stain removers struggle with these. Just note that we measured noticeable fading on dark-coloured cottons, though our cotton whites stayed bright.

While we appreciate that the recyclable pouch cuts down on plastic waste, it’s quite flimsy and the lack of scoop means you have to use your own tablespoon, which we found somewhat inaccurate. As one tester suggested, it would be great for refilling an old tub. A reliable stain remover overall, especially for blood and fresh food accidents, with some limitations.

Pros

  • Panel testers reported good results on fresh food and drink stains
  • Super portable – size of a slim marker

Cons

  • Sometimes difficult to get the pen to dispense product
  • Not as effective on tougher, dried-on stains

Score: 75/100

This handy stain pen is a lifesaver for the accident-prone. ‘It’s actually quite powerful when dealing with the basic stains, such as curry and sauces,’ one panellist told us, while another said it ‘worked really well on small food stains on a white cotton dress and T-shirts’.

To dispense, simply press the nib down on the stain and gently rub it in. You then just have to dab it with a damp cloth, though some users said that washing the product afterwards produced even better results.

While most panellists found the pen effective on fresh stains, they didn’t think it worked on tougher, dried-in marks – something that was reflected in our lab results – so it’s best saved for tackling accidents on the go. A brilliant little product for slipping into your bag on white shirt days.

If there’s one thing the Good Housekeeping Institute knows back to front, it’s laundry. We’ve been putting detergents, fabric softeners and washing machines to the test for decades – and we apply our trademark rigour to our stain remover tests, too.

best stain remover for clothes

Which type of stain remover is best?

Powder stain removers are the most versatile. They can be added directly to your washing machine or used as a pre-soak, while some can also be mixed into a paste to pre-treat targeted stains. For muddy clothes or food and drink stains, they’re great all-rounders.

Spray and liquid pre-treatments are designed to be applied directly on to stains before washing. They're ideal for tackling stubborn marks like dried-on coffee, blood or grease, especially if you don't want to soak an entire garment.

Stain pens are best kept in your handbag or desk drawer for dealing with fresh spills while you’re out. They’re quick and convenient, but generally aren’t as effective on older, set-in stains.

Things to consider before buying

Fabric compatibility – most stain removers are suitable for everyday fabrics, but delicates can be tricky. Always check whether it can be used on wool, silk or other delicates before treating a stain, and test it on a hidden area first.

How you'll use it – some products simply go in the washing machine, while others are designed as pre-treatments or long soaks. For small stains and stubborn marks, a spray or brush may be more convenient than a powder.

Sensitivities – if you have sensitive skin, you may prefer to opt for a non-bio formula such as Astonish Oxy Non Bio Stain Remover, or use a targeted application that will have minimal skin contact. Non-bio stain removers don’t contain enzymes and are often gentler, though biological products can be more effective on some stubborn stains.

What’s the best stain remover for clothes?

Our top-scoring stain remover is Vanish Gold Oxi Action, thanks to its strong, consistent all-round performance and ease of use. In our tests, it lifted everything from curry sauce and tomato purée to beef fat and sweat stains, while our panel praised its ability to revive stained socks and remove fake tan.

For tough, old stains, the HG Pre-treat Extra Strong Stain Remover is an excellent pre-treatment. Its targeted spray did a great job on stubborn marks that had already set into the fabric.

Is Dr. Beckmann or Vanish better?

Both brands performed well in our testing, but they excel in different areas.

If you’re looking for one product to keep in your laundry cupboard for everyday use, Vanish Gold Oxi Action is the stronger all-rounder. It removed a wide variety of stains and can be used as a pre-treatment, soak or in your washing machine’s detergent drawer.

Depending on the stain you’re targeting, Dr. Beckmann offers several specialist products that are also worth considering. The Dr. Beckmann Power Brush Stain Remover impressed us on grease, sebum and fresh food stains, while the Dr. Beckmann Oxi Power Stain Remover for Colours stood out on blood, baby food and curry stains. The Dr. Beckmann Stain Pen Express is also handy for treating fresh spills on the go.

What removes the toughest stains?

The sooner you treat a stain, the better your chances of removing it completely. Fresh stains are usually much easier to shift than dried-on ones, especially oily stains, red wine and blood. Applying a stain remover before washing gives the active ingredients time to break down the stain before your detergent gets to work.

If you’re dealing with stubborn, set-in stains, a targeted pre-treatment such as the HG Pre-treat Extra Strong Stain Remover is likely to be more effective than simply adding a stain remover to your washing machine.

Is there a stain that cannot be removed?

There are some stains that permanently alter or dye fabric fibres, especially if they’ve been left untreated for a long time or exposed to heat in a tumble dryer.

Paint, permanent marker, bleach marks and some fabric dyes can be impossible to reverse. That said, modern stain removers are remarkably effective. In our tests, several products completely removed notoriously difficult stains including red wine, curry, coffee, blood and lipstick when treated promptly.

Do I need a stain remover?

Not necessarily, but if you often have stained clothing that needs another round in the washing machine, it’s worth adding a stain remover to your regular wash cycle. Your normal laundry detergent can cope with everyday dirt, but stain removers contain ingredients that are designed to break down tougher substances like oils and proteins.

If you have young children, play sport, cook a lot or often wear white, pick up a stain remover. It could salvage garments that might otherwise be ruined, especially if you treat stains quickly.

best stain remover for clothes

Final verdict: what is the best stain remover?

Our best stain remover overall is Vanish Gold Oxi Action. This versatile everyday powder is very easy to use – you can pre-treat stains before washing or simply add a scoop to your detergent drawer – and it was a very strong performer on a wide variety of stains.

But if you’re tackling really tough stains, consider buying a bottle of HG Pre-treat Extra Strong Stain Remover. Our panel was impressed with this spray-on pre-treatment's ability to tackle even old, dried-in stains – and you only have to leave it on for five minutes before washing.
