As the weather cools, few things feel cozier than stepping out of a hot shower and into a plush bath towel. And if you’re looking to upgrade your current collection ASAP, it helps that some of the best sets are available on Amazon (thanks Prime shipping!)

Our top picks:

We recently tested over 80 towels in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab to determine which ones are worth buying and sent several to consumer testers to try them in their homes. The list below comes from our testing results, product research, and my professional expertise in textiles.

Diamond Jacquard 6 Pieces Bath Towel Set

Pros

  • Unique construction combines cotton and microfiber
  • Proved quick-drying in our tests
  • Soft and cozy feel

Cons

  • Sheds fuzzy fibers in the wash

Everplush's popular jacquard towels are both fast drying and absorbent, thanks to the unique construction featuring plush and absorbent cotton fibers on the surface and soft, quick-dry microfiber on the inside.

When we evaluated the towels in the Textiles Lab, they outperformed more than 40 other towels for their speedy drying time. During our wash tests, the material showed more signs of wear and produced more lint and fuzz than other towels, which can be attributed to the blended material. However, our testers noted that they maintained their appearance and looked great after several wash cycles.

Testers and GH analysts also noted that the towels were cozy, and our testers and I were impressed that the towels looked so high-end, despite the more affordable price tag. One tester shared, "The towel feels really soft, comfortable, and smooth on your skin." I personally use this towel set for my guest towels because they're so easy to care for and feel so cozy—some of my guests have even purchased the towels for themselves after their stay! The set includes two bath towels, two wash cloths, and two hand towels, so my guests are stocked with everything they need.

Quick-Dry Bath Towels, 2-Pack

Pros

  • Inexpensive, especially for a set of two
  • Super soft material
  • Maintained softness after laundering

Cons

  • Some testers thought it felt too lightweight

For under $20, this two-pack of towels is our favorite budget-friendly pick in our comprehensive list of the best bath towels. "It feels lightweight—it's thinner and less dense than other towels—yet it is still super soft," said Lexie Sachs, our executive director of strategy and operations. Sachs used this towel at home and was impressed that it felt much more expensive than its price would suggest.

In our Lab tests, we found that the towel was incredibly soft; however, it wasn't as absorbent and exhibited some shrinkage after laundering. Nevertheless, it maintained its softness over time. Its performance was comparable to towels triple the price and testers loved the softness of the towel after showering. Some testers did not appreciate the lightweight feel of the towel, especially those who prefer heavy-duty, thick towels.

Pros

  • Proved very absorbent in our Lab tests
  • Extra plush feel
  • Testers gave high ratings for softness

Cons

  • Longer dry time

At 820 GSM (grams per square meter), this towel from Brooklinen is heavier weight than any of our other picks. The luxurious 100% Turkish cotton towel is dense and "almost feel like a blanket," according to one tester. It excelled in our Textiles Lab evaluations for absorbency and was unanimously rated as soft by our consumer testers. I personally use this seriously cozy towel and the larger bath sheets and can't get enough of them.

When we washed the towel in the Textiles Lab, we were impressed by how few fibers it shed, given that it's so plush. The trade-off: The hefty towel took longer to dry than some others, and one tester noted, "It's important to hang the towels up properly without bunching or folding the material because you might end up with wet spots."

Brooklinen offers a few shades on its Amazon storefront, but the brand's site features bolder color and striped options.

8-Piece Towel Set

Pros

  • Eight total pieces
  • 25 colors to choose from

Cons

  • May not be as high quality as other picks

If you moved recently or want to replace all your bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths at once, this set comes at a great price. I've found that most towel sets tend to come with six pieces, but this one from Utopia Towels on Amazon includes two standard bath towels, two hand towels, and four washcloths—and all eight pieces are less than $35 (at retail).

With 25 colors to choose from, including everyday neutrals and fashionable shades, there's bound to be a set to coordinate with your bathroom decor. While not the most plush, the towels are 100% cotton, which is known for its absorbency, and they should get the job done so you're nice and dry after a shower or bath.

4-Piece Bath Towel Set
Credit: American Soft Linen

Pros

  • Heavier weight option at 600 GSM
  • 100% Turkish cotton fibers
  • Impressive value for a set of 4

Cons

  • Feel thin

One of Amazon's best-selling bath towel sets, this set comes with four bath towels for just under $45.

I love that the towels are made from 100% Turkish cotton, which is a higher-quality, longer cotton fiber that tends to have a softer feel than shorter-staple cotton. The towels are 600 GSM, which means they're on the heavier end for a standard towel and should feel nice and fluffy. Some reviewers expressed disappointment that the towels were thin and not as full as they appeared in the online pictures, but others noted that the towels fluffed up in the wash.

Luxury Hotel & Spa Turkish Bath Towels, Set of 4

Pros

  • Minimal linting in the wash
  • Turkish cotton is known for being luxurious
  • Held up to years of regular use

Cons

  • Not as soft as other options

If you're looking for an affordable yet long-lasting towel, I recommend these durable bath towels from Chakir Turkish Linens.

I have used these towels for several years in my own home, and I never experienced linting or shedding fibers in the wash. Plus, the towels looked great after being laundered dozens of times. While they weren't the softest towels I've ever used, they were efficient and absorbent.

The towels are made with 100% long-staple Turkish cotton fibers, which have a smooth feel and more uniform structure, making them inherently more durable and a little more luxurious than short staple cottons.

Oversized Bath Sheet

Pros

  • Come in nearly 20 vibrant and neutral colors
  • Extra-large 40"x 80" size

Cons

  • Brand recommends laundering first because of shedding

Whether you prefer a big, fluffy towel to completely wrap up in after a shower or you're tall like me and need more coverage to dry off, this giant bath towel can do the job. Most standard bath towels are around 27 inches wide and 52 to 56 inches long, but this oversized bath sheet is a whopping 40 inches wide and 80 inches long.

The 100% cotton terrycloth material is perfect for soaking up excess water when you step out of the tub, and there's plenty of it to get you nice and dry. According to the brand, the towels are prone to shedding right off the bat, so it's best to launder them prior to using so the excess fuzz doesn't stick to you and ends up in the dryer lint trap instead. It's available in 10 neutrals and brights.

Turkish Cotton Bath Towels, Set of 3

Pros

  • Heavier weight
  • Brand has performed well in durability tests
  • GOTS-certified organic materials

Cons

  • Limited inventory

This towel set is ideal for anyone looking to shop organic cotton materials. We were impressed by Delilah Home's organic sheets in our Textiles Lab tests, and we love that these towels are made with 100% GOTS-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) organic cotton just like the brand's sheets (which are our best overall organic sheets). This certification ensures that the brand follows strict standards for manufacturing and uses truly organic materials.

Delilah Home's organic cotton bedding performed well in our durability tests, resisting shrinkage and wear in the wash, and we expect that the brand's towels will perform similarly. They're made with 700-GSM cotton terrycloth, so they're heavier weight than many of the other featured picks for a plusher feel. This three-piece set includes a bath towel, a hand towel, and a washcloth, all of which are generously sized and offered at a great deal—just $65 at full price.

Just know, there's limited inventory in some colors, so it's a good idea to grab them while they're in stock.

How we choose the best bath towels on Amazon

linebreak

In the Good Housekeeping Institute, we test towels, including beach towels, kitchen towels, and bath towels in our Textiles Lab and share them with our consumer testers. In recent years, we've tested more than 90 towels from popular brands. When we evaluate towels, here are some characteristics that we analyze:

✔️ Washability: In the Lab, we wash each towel 20 times, measuring shrinkage and rating changes in appearance with each wash. We also weigh the towels before and after washing to evaluate how much the towels have linted (shed fibers).

✔️ Drying speed: To calculate drying speed, we pour a standard amount of water on a towel swatch. Then, the towel is hung to dry and weighed every 30 minutes until it returns to its initial weight, indicating that it has fully dried.

✔️ Absorbency: We set up a towel at a 60-degree angle and then pour water from a standard distance onto the towel (pictured). Any water that isn't absorbed by the towel rolls off and into a tray below, which is weighed. This process is repeated throughout the laundering cycles to account for absorbency changes after washing. The runoff water helps us to calculate absorbency levels, and a towel with excellent absorbency will soak up all water with no runoff in the tray.

✔️ Fabric strength: To assess how durable towels are, we use our Instron machine to pull towel fabric swatches apart and measure the force needed to rip each swatch.

✔️ Consumer tests: Lastly, we share towels with dozens of consumer testers who actually use the towels in their homes and rate them on factors such as appearance, dry time, and softness.

What to look for when shopping for the best bath towels on Amazon

"

When buying bath towels on Amazon, it's a good idea to first consider what type of towel you're looking for: absorbent or quick-drying.

✔️ Absorbent towels: Towels made of 100% cotton fibers, especially longer staple cottons like Turkish cotton, are very absorbent and will help you to dry off quickly. A denser towel has more loops of yarn on the surface and will be more absorbent as a result. You can also consider GSM (grams per square meter), which is the weight of the towel. A towel with a weight of over 600 GSM is a heavier weight, and these towels will likely be more absorbent and plush. A lower GSM towel will be lighter weight and may not feel as soft or absorb as much moisture.

✔️ Quick-dry towels: If you're looking for a low-maintenance towel that dries quickly, consider a cotton and polyester blend towel or a cotton towel with a shorter yarn loop (lower pile). Polyester fibers are inherently hydrophobic, meaning they don't absorb moisture, and low-pile loops have a reduced capacity for absorption. A towel with either of those features will be less absorbent but will dry more quickly and may prove to be more durable in the long term.
