Normally, a little sweet treat at the end of the day is a welcome delight; however, dessert fans need to take note of a new recall. Yesterday, the FDA announced updated details for a voluntary recall of select Outshine Fruit Bars manufactured by Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream due to possible contamination. Here's what you need to know and how to check the freezer.

What is being recalled?

According to the FDA, Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream is recalling select flavors of its Outshine Fruit Bars. The recall includes its Outshine Strawberry, Watermelon, Grape, Tangerine, and Black Cherry flavors in 6-count and 24-count boxes containing the 2.5-ounce Fruit Bars that were distributed to retailers nationwide. No other Outshine products or varieties are included in the recall.

Each flavor included in this recall is also tied to a specific UPC code, with multiple batch codes and best-before dates printed on the bottom of the package. The best-before dates associated with the affected batches range from May 31, 2027, through November 30, 2027. Consumers should check the full list of batch codes published in the brand's recall notice to ensure the ones in their freezer are not affected before they enjoy them.

Why are these fruit bars being recalled?

Dreyer's explained in its release that the recall was initiated due to possible glass contamination. The company did not share specifics on how the contamination occurred or how the contamination was discovered. However, it did add that no illnesses or injuries have been reported to date. (Though if you do believe you consumed one of the affected bars and feel ill, it's important to reach out to a medical professional immediately.)

"The safety, quality, and integrity of our products remain our highest priority. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action may cause our consumers and retail customers," the company added in its release. "We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of food safety and quality and to earning the trust of our consumers and customers every day."

What should I do if I have these bars in my freezer?

The company stated that anyone who recently purchased Outshine Fruit Bars should check the batch code on the bottom of the package against the recalled lots, as well as the best-before date. If it matches, customers should dispose of the bars immediately or return the box to their place of purchase for a full refund.
