On August 17, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a recall notice for Dairyland Produce, LLC, doing business as Hardie's Fresh Foods, which is recalling jalapeños sold at two Costco locations in Texas due to possible Salmonella contamination.
Here's what you need to know and how to check the spicy peppers in your fridge right now.
Which jalapeños are being recalled?
According to the FDA notice, the recall covers Pepper Jalapeno 5-pound bags, which were distributed to two Costco stores: Store #1487 at 12717 Network Drive in Stafford, TX, and Store #0655 at 8282 Park Lane in Dallas.
The affected jalapeños, repacked by Hardie's Fresh Foods, were sold in clear plastic bags. The products are easily identifiable by their lot codes printed on the packaging. The recalled lot codes include the following: X2741775, X2741859, X2744163, X2744706, X2746349, X2746490, and X2748743.
The bags also include the production dates: 26192 (07/11/26), 26196 (07/15/26), 26197 (07/16/26), 26199 (07/18/26), and 26203 (07/22/26).
Why are these jalapeños being recalled?
The company stated in the release that it initiated the recall after discovering that the jalapeños could be contaminated with Salmonella. Hardie's Fresh Foods added that it has "ceased the production and distribution of the product."
What is Salmonella, and how does it make you sick?
The FDA announcement explained that Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older or frail adults, and people with weakened immune systems. More specifically, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that children under 5 years—especially children who are younger than 1 year—and adults over 50—particularly those with underlying medical conditions—and international travelers should be particularly cautious.
"Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain," the FDA release added. "In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis."
What to do if you have these jalapeños
Anyone who purchased the jalapeños included in this recall should not consume them and should either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
