As a bedding expert at the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, it’s challenging to find bedding that impresses me, but my girlfriend is even harder to please. When we stayed at a hotel for our anniversary, she said she had the best sleep of her life, thanks to the incredible mattress. I immediately knew I had to get this mattress for our apartment. Most don’t realize that it’s actually incredibly easy to purchase most hospitality lines for your own home—and they aren’t any more expensive than traditional mattress retailers.
How to find the mattress used in the hotel
The first step is the easiest: Simply ask.
I called the front desk of the hotel once I got home and asked what mattresses they use in their rooms. The team told me the brand and style they use. Super easy and took less than five minutes. Then, I found the listing online. Many of these hospitality bedding lines offer guest-purchase programs, often with professional delivery and set-up like any other mattress retailer.
Not every hotel will be able to share this information or they may not know (especially at a smaller hotel or an Airbnb). When you’re at the hotel, you can take a peek under the sheets and see if you can spot any branding.
My experience buying a hotel bed
When I called the front desk to inquire about what mattress we had slept on, they quickly answered my question and told me they use Serta Conceirge Plush (Two-Sided) Mattress. I did a quick search online and learned that it can simply be purchased from the Serta Hospitality site.
Serta set up the mattress in my apartment and removed my previous one with convenient and free white-glove delivery. Once we began sleeping on it, the mattress was just as comfortable as we remembered.
Was it worth it?
Absolutely, yes! My girlfriend and I struggle to find bedding that we both agree on, so finally having a mattress we both love has been such a relief. The ordering and delivery process felt no different than ordering a mattress from any other online retailer.
This innerspring mattress has a plush pillow top that cushions my hips and shoulders when I’m sleeping on my side. My girlfriend is a hot sleeper and she is blown away by its airy feel compared to our previous memory foam bed, thanks to its cooling foam and breathable coils. I like that this mattress is flippable with a firmer and softer side in case we want a firmer bed in the future.
Plus, it feels special to have the same mattress as our favorite hotel, so we can sleep in five-star luxury every night.
Where to buy hotel mattresses
If you want a hotel bed for your own home, these are the most popular hospitality mattress sites.
- Marriot: A mix of price points from Westin to Ritz-Carlton mattresses
- Four Seasons: Luxurious mattresses sold as a set with bedding
- Kimpton Style: Plush top mattress with a box-spring option
- Beautyrest Guest Purchase: Impressive range of options at various price points found at Margarittaville, InterContinental, and Best Western hotels
- Serta Hospitality: Wide range of mattresses with free white-glove delivery
Are hotel mattresses different from retail versions?
Yes, they are often a completely different mattress (even if the manufacturer is the same). This is because the beds are designed for heavy-duty use, so they have a different construction and feel compared to the same brand’s typical mattress line.
You may think “hotel-luxury” equals a high price tag, but most hotel mattresses I’ve found are similar in price to mattresses from popular retailers. They certainly aren’t cheap and most retail for over $1,500, but that is on par with many mattresses on the market.
