This story contains light spoilers from The Way Home.
As The Way Home enters its final season on Hallmark, Andie MacDowell has something to say about her role.
When the hit drama premiered in 2023, fans were acquainted with the matriarch of the Landry family, Delilah or “Del.” She went through plenty of highs and lows, including finding her son Jacob (Spencer Macpherson) after he went missing decades prior, reuniting with her estranged daughter Kat (Chyler Leigh) and granddaughter Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow), and learning many important lessons as the group travels through time.
But Andie believes that season 4 is where fans will see the character’s full arc, given how Del is finally getting vulnerable.
"I think there's a sense of growth for Del on The Way Home this season,” Andie told Good Housekeeping exclusively about the final installment in an interview on April 15. “I like to say it's almost like she softened her edges, which I think was rightly so. She’s earned all those edges because of everything that has happened to her.”
Andie added that she put a lot of care into portraying Del in this final season.
“With Del having conquered some of the most painful parts of her past, I thought that for season four, Del needed to really soften those edges,” she adds. “I tried really hard to soften those edges and be much more of a mature, grounded person who had evolved. She had reconciled her relationship with her daughter, and now she had a beautiful relationship with her granddaughter. So, there was no reason for those edges anymore. Her hardness could soften, and she could really be present with them.”
If there’s one thing Andie hopes fans take away from Del, it’s that it’s OK to not always be strong.
“Fans are going to see some vulnerability with Del that hasn’t been seen in the past,” she concludes. “Hopefully, the audience feels empathetic towards Del and sees that she’s really coming into her own in both the right place and the right time for her.”
We’ll need to tune in to The Way Home’s final season after hearing this!
